Tribeca Film Festival to Open with “The First Monday in May”

The Tribeca Film Festival in New York this month opens with The First Monday in May, an eagerly awaited film about the putting-on of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition China: Through the Looking Glass. With unprecedented access, film director Andrew Rossi captured the collision of high fashion and celebrity at the Met Gala, one of the biggest global fashion events, which is co-led every year by Condé Nast artistic director and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The cast of real-life characters includes renowned artists in many fields, such as Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai and fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano. The movie dives into the debate about whether fashion should be viewed as art. “You need a mix of art and commerce,” Wintour says. It’s grippingly glamorous cinema or, perhaps, cinereality. tribecafilm.com
