Sometimes it’s personal. As Son Na-eun doubles down on her acting career, she tells Zaneta Cheng it’s because she finds magic in the craft. But it’s also through the craft that she’s finding new facets of herself and she’s excited to see where that will take her

The process of growing into oneself is never an easy one, let alone having to do so in front of national and international audiences the way 28-year-old Son Na-eun has done. Son first set foot in the entertainment industry in 2011 at the age of 17 and was quick to carve out a path for herself as an actress.
When asked what it is about acting that draws her to it, Son’s reply is simple. “It’s not anything grand – acting just has a large impact on me. I think each project helps me grow by allowing me to come across new characters and work with new people,” she says. “It’s really interesting that I get to live a different life while acting and I’m also grateful to be able to experience things that I wouldn’t otherwise come across if it weren’t for acting. Acting is still difficult for me and it’s a process that continues to be challenging. But when I go on set, my mindset is to enjoy the experience and have fun.”
Because Son has been in the public eye for over a decade now, it’s easy to forget that she is of real adulthood with a surer grasp over who she is, who she wants to be and how to get there. Chalk it up perhaps to it being right around Son’s Saturn return but there’s a sense that the actress is simultaneously building an impressive filmography while also discovering new facets of herself.
“One of my most important goals is to be consistently releasing a wide range of work,” Son says. “If I get the opportunity, I’d like to tell a love story that moves young people and I also want to try portraying a more intense character like a villain with a twist. There are so many roles I want to try, so it would be really nice if I get to show a new side of myself with each new role I take on.”
In Ghost Doctor, Son is spunky and direct in her role as medical intern Oh Soo-jeong. When she first received the script, she felt an instant connection with the character. “I felt tense and excited and moved all at once when I was reading [the script]. I felt so attached to the character that there was really no reason for me not to play this role,” Son says. “Above all, I think I was able to approach viewers in a more sincere way because the story conveys messages about how precious life is and to cherish the people we have in it.”
The show was so popular on Netflix that it ranked seventh on the platform’s global top 10 in the month of July. While the premise is compelling – medical dramas have always fared well, between the private dramas of the medical staff and each episode’s medical conundrum – striking a balance between getting the facts right, the medical problems convincing and delivering stirring storylines is a delicate one that involves all members of crew and cast. Son knows this well.
“While I was preparing for the character of Soo-jeong, I worked on capturing the manner doctors speak in a hospital atmosphere in a convincing and natural way. To do this, I would watch documentaries set in emergency rooms and I also asked a lot of questions to the advisors and people around me on set,” she says. “It was my first time acting as a doctor so it was the first time I was on a hospital set with surgery scenes. It was a really unique and nerve-wracking experience, and I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.”
At the same time, Son’s character Oh Soo-jeong goes beyond the normal call of duty. Armed with outsized resolve and responsibility, the character is, Son admits, “frank and much more straightforward than I am, so we’re different that way, even though we’re similar in that we’re both easygoing and curious. While it was fun portraying a personality so different from myself, I had to really think about how to play her and make it work.”
Son’s opening scene as an intern who takes initiative to chase after Professor Cha Young-min, the best doctor in the hospital played by Rain, up and down an escalator in order to persuade him to save a patient freshly admitted into the emergency room is as memorable to her as it is to audiences – “It’s a scene that demonstrates Soo-jeong’s sense of justice and passion right from the get-go!”

The actress’s dedication to her métier has seen her develop a filmography next to some of the biggest names in Korean entertainment. From Rain in Ghost Doctor to Seo Ji-hye in Dinner Mate, Son counts herself lucky to have worked alongside them.
“I’ve worked with many senior actors and I somehow always manage to get a lot of inspiration watching them work on set,” she says. “Seeing how they prepare so thoroughly even though they have so much more experience and how they come on set with a good mood and lead that atmosphere really makes me want to grow into someone like them. There were also many moments where I thought, ‘Oh, so that’s how you can express yourself in a scene like
this’ when watching them work.”
True to her word, Son is playing a very different character in her next project Agency (Working Title). Also featuring Lee Bo-young, Jo Sung-ha and Han Joon-woo, the show is another fast-paced, high-stakes workplace drama but this time rather than a hospital, it’s in the advertising industry, and the plot traces the path of a female executive who manages to become top dog in her agency.
Son is excited about her new role. “I play the role of Kang Han-na, who is a third-generation member of a tycoon family and a famous social media influencer. She acts like a child, but this character possesses a natural intuition that drives her to success,” Son explains. “Compared to my previous work, I think this role is definitely more colourful and lively. It shows a completely new side of myself, because the show throws itself into depicting the cutthroat nature of the advertising industry as vividly as possible and I think it’ll be so fun to watch.”
Constantly looking to challenge herself with ever more variety, the actress remains humble. She cites her character in Lost as one of the more difficult roles she has encountered. “On the surface Min-jung seems simple and strange but Min-jung’s interior reality – how she feels and lives – is not actually like that. I thought a lot about the reasons behind each of Min-jung’s lines and actions and I also thought a lot about how to capture those things well. I think I was able to do it by talking it through quite thoroughly with the director on set,” Son says.
And while she supports everyone who wants to dedicate themselves to the pleasure and privilege that she finds acting to be, Son also says, “It’s difficult for me to give advice to anyone. I’m still in the process of learning myself so I want to support everyone who is passionate about acting and I hope for them, as I do for myself, to hear that people are excited about what they choose for their next project.”
Son has a hard time letting go of her characters, she tells me. So, in addition to spending her days off exercising and seeing loved ones, she has taken to meditating for half an hour each day. She’s an INTJ and “my body gets tense when I work so I take time for myself so I can relax my mind and my body even if it’s just for 30 minutes a day. It really helps improve my mood and gives me better energy when I work. Even my physical condition improves after it.”
As she embarks on this fresh chapter of her career, Son cites her fans as her #legend. “I’m always grateful to the fans who have always supported me but I’m also sorry that I do not yet have as many opportunities to repay the love I receive,” she says. “For now, I’m working hard to show different good sides of myself through new work, and I’m going to try and make more time to communicate with my fans in the future.”

오랜 가수 생활에 마침표를 찍고 배우로 홀로서기를 도전하는 손나은은 자네타 청에게 그녀가 ‘배우’라는 직업에 느낀 매력에 대해 이야기 합니다. 그리고 그녀는 앞으로 펼쳐질 배우 생활에 대한 기대감을 표현합니다
17세라는 어린 나이에 가수라는 꿈을 가지고 엔터테인먼트에 처음 발을 들인 손나은은 20대 중반의 나이에 배우로서의 홀로서기를 결심하기까지의 과정이 결코 쉽지 않았다고 말합니다.
그녀가 연기라는 새로운 분야에 관심을 갖게 된 계기는 매우 간단했습니다. “거창한 건 아니더라도 연기가 저에게 미치는 영향은 분명히 있었어요. 매 작품 새로운 캐릭터를 만나고, 새로운 사람들과 함께하면서 저를 성장하게끔 만든다고 생각해요.” 라고 그녀는 말합니다. “그리고 연기를 하면서 새로운 삶을 살아보는게 참 흥미로운 일인 것 같아요. 연기를 하지 않았다면 접하지 못했을 경험들을 할 수 있다는 게 감사하기도 하고요. 아직 연기가 어렵기도 하고 계속해서 도전해 나가는 과정에 있지만, 현장에 가면 최대한 ‘즐기자’, ‘재미있게 하자’는 마음가짐으로 임하고 있는 것 같아요.”
10년 넘게 대중의 시선에 중점을 두는 공인의 삶을 살아온 손나은은 그녀의 20대 후반의 삶 그리고 방향성에 대해 아직 미숙합니다. 따라서 ‘연기자’라는 새로운 도전 그리고 지금까지 쌓아온 필모그래피들은 그녀가 오로지 한 개인으로서 지향하는 삶에 한 발자국 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있게 도와준 계기라고 감히 말할 수 있습니다.
“우선은 다양한 작품으로 꾸준하게 인사를 드리는 게 저의 가장 중요한 목표 중 하나인 거 같아요.” 그녀는 자신의 연기 목표에 대해 말합니다. “기회가 된다면 청춘들의 공감을 얻을 수 있는 로맨스도 해보고 싶고, 강렬하고 반전 있는 악역 역할도 맡아보고 싶어요. 아직 해보고 싶은 게 많아서, 어떤 역할이든 계속해서 새로운 모습을 보여드릴 수 있다면 좋을 것 같아요.”
배우 손나은은 최근 2월 종영한 고스트 닥터에서 용감하고 당찬 응급실 인턴 역할 오수정을 완벽하게 소화해 냈습니다. “처음 대본을 만났을 때부터 긴장감, 재미, 감동을 한번에 느낄 수 있는 작품이라는 생각이 들었고 캐릭터도 너무 애정이 가서 안 할 이유가 없었어요.” 그녀는 처음 대본을 받았을 때부터 오수정이라는 배역에 애정이 갔다고 표현합니다. “무엇보다 그 안에서 생명이나 소중한 사람들에 대한 메세지도 있었기 때문에 시청자분들께 더 진심으로 다가갈 수 있었던 작품이었던 거 같아요.”
고스트 닥터는 7월 글로벌 넷플릭스 인기 순위 7위에 머물며 시청자들에게 큰 사랑을 받았습니다. 이와 같이 의료진들의 삶과 그들이 마주하는 여러 직업적 딜레마들을 현실적으로 다루는 메디컬 드라마들은 이전부터 시청자들에게 지속적인 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 그리고 어쩌면 배우 손나은이 배역 오수정에게 느꼈던 특별한 애정 역시 이런 점에 비롯 되어 있다고 생각 됩니다.
“오수정이라는 캐릭터를 준비하면서 병원과 의사의 특유 분위기, 말투 등 직업적 특징들을 자연스럽게 익히려고 노력했던 거 같아요. 응급실 배경의 다큐멘터리도 보고, 현장에 계신 자문 선생님이나 주변 분들께 이것저것 많이 여쭤 보기도 했고요.” 그녀는 배역 오수정을 완벽히 소화해내기 위해 들였던 노력들에 대해 들려줍니다. “의사 역할은 처음이었기에 실제 병원 같은 세트, 수술 장면 등을 다 처음 경험해 봤는데 정말 신기하면서도 떨렸고, 평생 잊지 못할 시간들이었던 거 같아요.”
배우 손나은이 연기했던 캐릭터 오수정은 단순히 용감함만 가지고 연기 할 수 있는 배역이 아니었습니다. 그녀는 의사라는 직업에 강한 결의와 책임감을 지닌 배역 오수정과 자신은 어느정도 비슷한 모습을 가지고 있지만 매우 다른 성격을 지닌 캐릭터라고 설명합니다. “오수정이라는 캐릭터는 저보다 훨씬 직설적이고 솔직한 편이라, 그런 점은 매우 달랐던 거 같아요. 오히려 저와 다른 부분들을 연기하면서 더 재미를 느꼈고, 어떻게 하면 잘 살려 낼 수 있을 까도 많이 고민 했어요.”
일반적인 인턴 의사들이 갖기 어려운 남다른 정의감과 용기를 보여주었던 드라마 고스트 닥터의 첫 오프닝은 오수정역의 배우 손나은이 흉부외과 최고의 교수 차영민 역을 맡은 비(정지훈)에게 위독한 응급 환자의 수술 제의로 당차게 시작합니다. 위 장면은 배우 손나은의 남다른 당찬 감정 연기와 함께 시청자들에게 잊지 못할 임팩트를 줬습니다 – “수정이의 첫 등장이었던 이 장면은 수정이라는 캐릭터의 정의와 열정이 잘 담겼다고 생각해요.”

“그동안 많은 선배님들과 함께 작품을 했는데, 현장에서 선배님들을 보면서 항상 새로운 자극을 많이 받았던 거 같아요. 특히 많은 경험이 있으심에도 불구하고 항상 꼼꼼하게 준비하시는 모습, 촬영장을 좋은 분위기로 이끄시려고 노력하는 모습들을 보면 저도 힘을 얻고, 저렇게 되고 싶다는 생각도 들고요. 또, ‘아, 이런 장면에서는 이렇게 표현하시는구나’ 하는 연기적 부분에 있어 매 순간 배우고 있어요.”
다양한 작품으로 인사 드리고 싶다는 말에 걸맞게, 배우 손나은은 차기작 대행사(가제) 에서 색다른 캐릭터를 연기합니다. 배우 이보영, 조성하, 한준우 등 다양한 유명배우들과 함께 호흡을 맞추는 차기작 대행사(가제)는 광고업계에 종사한 여성 임원의 최고를 향한 무궁무진한 도전을 줄거리로 담고 있습니다.
배우 손나은은 새로운 역할에 대한 기대를 표합니다. “이번에 출연하게 된 대행사(가제)에서는 VC그룹 재벌 3세이자 SNS 스타 인플루언서 강한나 역을 맡았어요. 철부지처럼 보이지만 타고난 천재적 직감으로 성공을 향해 가는 인물이에요.” 그녀는 새로운 배역 강한나에 대해 설명합니다. “전 작품과 비교해보면 좀 더 발랄하고 화려한 모습을 지녔다고 할 수 있을 거 같아요. 저의 새로운 모습뿐만 아니라, 이번 드라마가 치열한 광고 업계를 생생하게 다루는 만큼 보시는 분들도 흥미를 느낄 수 있을 테니 많이 기대해 주셨으면 좋겠어요.”
새로운 배역을 위해 끊임없이 도전하기 위해 배우 손나은은 항상 겸손한 마음가짐을 유지합니다. 그녀는 드라마 인간실격에서 연기했던 배역 민정이 연기 생활에 있어 묘사하기 가장 까다롭다고 이야기 합니다. “민정이는 겉보기에는 단순해 보이고, 엉뚱해 보이는 인물이지만 살아가는 인생과 현실은 전혀 그렇지 않았어요. 민정이의 대사, 행동 하나하나 이유가 있을 거라고 생각했고 그런 것들을 어떻게 잘 담아낼 수 있을까 정말 많이 고민 했어요. 현장에서 감독님과 많은 이야기를 나누면서 잘 만들어 나갈 수 있었던 거 같아요.”
그녀는 자신과 같이 연기에 대한 즐거움과 특권을 누릴 수 있는 사람들에게 조언합니다. “아직 누군가에게 조언하기는 조심스럽지만 저와 같이 연기의 매력을 알고 도전하는 모든 분들 그리고 그들이 차기작을 정할때 느끼는 즐거움 모두 다 응원하고 싶어요.”
‘전략가’ 유형의 INTJ 성격에 속하는 배우 손나은은 일과 일상생활을 조금이나마 분리할 수 있게 노력하고 있다고 말합니다. 특히, 그녀는 운동, 지인들과의 편안한 식사자리 그리고 30분동안의 명상 시간을 가지며 일에 벗어난 다양한 활동들로 여가 시간을 채운다고 말합니다. “일을 하다 보면 몸이 긴장 상태가 되기 때문에 하루 30분이라도 몸과 마음이 안정 될 수 있도록 저 자신을 위한 시간을 가지고 있어요. 그러면 컨디션 그리고 기분도 좋아지고 일을 할 때 더 좋은 에너지를 갖게 되는 거 같아요.”
가수 손나은이 아닌 배우 손나은으로서 앞으로의 삶이 더욱더 기대되는 그녀는 #legend 팬들에게 그녀의 향후에 대한 계획을 전달합니다. “항상 변함없이 저를 응원해 주시는 팬분들께는 늘 고마운 마음 뿐이에요. 받는 사랑만큼 제가 보답할 수 있는 기회가 많지 않은 것 같아서 미안하고요. 우선은 새로운 작품을 통해서 좋은 모습 보여 드리기 위해 노력하고 있고 앞으로도 팬분들과 소통할 수 있는 시간들을 더 많이 만들어보려고 노력하고 있기에 조금만 더 기다려 주셨으면 좋겠어요!”
