Tomorrow is December! David Ho looks back at the most memorable fashion moments of the past 11 months of 2023
Rihanna’s SuperBowl pregnancy chic
Rihanna rocked the Superbowl this year and turned it into her babyshower. Riri made a great musical comeback in a nippled breast plate and jumpsuit by Loewe, as well as a floor-length puffer coat and gloves by Alaïa. It looks casual but the bold red jumpsuit is comprised of multiple layers and textures. The foundation is a silk jersey, with a matching cotton canvas flight suit and a made-to-measure corset in sculpted leather.
Met Gala kitty madness
We can always count on the Met Gala for some memorable fashion moments. This year, the event paid tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld. A few guests decided to go as iterations of Lagerfeld’s pampered kitty Choupette. Doja Cat sported completely hand-beaded gown with a face-framing hood and cat ears from Oscar de la Renta and meowed her way through her red carpet interview. Jared Leto also let out his inner furry in a custom cat costume made by production studio SCPS.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s courtroom fashion
Love her or hate her, the actress and Goop entrepreneur knows how to make an entrance. When Gwyneth Paltrow had to turn up in court for a civil suit over a ski crash in March, her brand of quiet luxury quickly became the talk of the Internet. Each outfit she turned up in became in equal parts, memes and masterclasses on courtroom looks. She has since kept it up with outfit of the day (OOTD) posts on her Instagram.
Kim Kardashian makes a point (or two)
The eyes are the nipples of the face, according to Anna Faris’ character in The House Bunny. Kim Kardashian has taken that to heart and decided to just focus on the nipples themselves, when she unveiled her the Ultimate Nipple Bra for her innerwear brand Skims. Tagged as “the bra that broke the internet”, the push-up bra comes with built-in nipples for the ultimate attention-grabbing look. This look of chilly weather perkiness might just be the trend for next year as we #freethenipple.
Claudia Schiffer Barbie
Barbie is a fashion icon and so is Claudia Schiffer. It’s only fitting that Mattel pays tribute to the supermodel with her own doll in a look that Schiffer herself says is her “favourite Versace runway look of all time.” The Claudia Schiffer Barbie wears the iconic cerulean Versace gown she sported for the maison’s runway show in 1994, almost three decades ago. The doll was just open for pre-orders and immediately sold out.
It seems like the major fashion brands are flocking to this side of the world again. Chanel restaged its latest cruise show in Shenzhen recently, Dior is coming to Hong Kong for a show soon and Louis Vuitton is debuting its pre-fall menswear collection for 2024 designed by Pharrell tonight. We are expecting many more memorable fashion moments so watch the livestream right here.
