Margot Robbie’s Barbie fashion inspirations

With the Barbie movie promo in full swing, Margot Robbie has been serving inspired fashion moments everywhere, just like the iconic toy. David Ho checks out the looks and the references behind them

Australia

In Australia, Margot Robbie wears a custom Hervé Léger dress. We’ve seen her sport a swimsuit with similar black and white stripes in the first Space Odyssey referencing the trailer for the film.

The looks are inspired by the swimsuit worn by the very first Barbie made in 1959. Though there have been several waves of reproduction, the 1959 original is now the rarest and most sought after doll for collectors. Drag queen Trixie Mattel acquired one recently and showed it off in an unboxing video.

While Down Under, Robbie also shimmered in this pink Versace dress at the Barbie Celebration Party at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. The dress is from a 1994 collection that Claudia Schiffer has worn before.

It’s likely a reference to the Barbie Fashionistas Glam Doll Pink Dress Swappin Styles from 2010. It’s giving us Paris Hilton’s Barbie look on the 2022 runway for Versace too.

Mexico

In Mexico, Margot Robbie sports crimped hair and a psychedelic Emilio Pucci outfit with pink Manolo Blahnik heels.

The inspiration for it is the Totally Hair Barbie, the best selling Barbie of all time. It was released in 1992 and 10 million units were sold.

Another look Robbie rocked in Mexico with her Ken (Ryan Gosling). She wore Balmain for this.

The outfit is a reference to Earring Magic Barbie. Fun fact: The Ken doll from the Earring Magic series is the best selling Ken doll ever. It seems the looks in Mexico took its cues from the best sellers.

South Korea

In Seoul, Robbie wore a Moschino suit. Moschino’s 2015 spring/summer collection by Jeremy Scott was heavily inspired by Barbie, so it’s a full circle moment for the label.

Her stylist Andrew Mukamal has confirmed that the outfit is inspired by the Sparkling Pink Barbie from 1964.

Robbie is twice as nice in two custom Versace outfits on the pink carpet in Korea.

Both looks are nods to 1985’s Day-to-Night Barbie. She works hard and plays harder!

It’s a nod to the Perfect Day outfit she wears in the movie and for the film’s dolls. We live for that scene of her floating down from her Dreamhouse in this dress.

Barbie, we mean Robbie, poses with her pink Corvette. A plastic girl needs to get around and she does it in style.

The Pink and Fabulous Barbie from 2015 is clearly the muse. It’s a nice homage, complete with the yellow bag. We love how accurate the Corvette is too, a remote controlled version is now out.

Robbie attends the Barbie world premiere in Los Angeles wearing Schiaparelli haute couture. She paired that with more than 350 carats of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds and Manolo Blahnik heels.

It’s another 60’s reference for the look as she pulls from the Solo in the Spotlight Barbie, released in 1960. 63 years ago and still a classic!
