With Father’s Day coming up, there is probably no better excuse to slow down and watch a great film with your dad. From emotional father-child stories to crowd-pleasing blockbusters and timeless classics, these six films perfectly capture the warmth, chaos and complicated bonds that often come with fatherhood

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

More than just a nostalgic action sequel, Top Gun: Maverick surprisingly works as a great Father’s Day watch through its themes of mentorship, legacy and healing old wounds. Tom Cruise returns as Maverick, now training a younger generation of pilots, including Rooster (Miles Teller), the son of his late best friend Goose. Beyond the breathtaking aerial action, much of the film’s emotional weight comes from Maverick slowly stepping into a father-figure role while confronting the regrets of his past.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Even after all these years, Finding Nemo still stands as one of Pixar’s most heartfelt films about parenthood. Marlin’s journey across the ocean to rescue his son works equally well as a fun adventure and an emotional story about fear, protection and learning to let go as Nemo slowly discovers his own independence. For younger children and parents watching together, few animated films resonate quite as strongly.

Interstellar (2014)

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar may be best known for its ambitious sci-fi concepts and breathtaking visuals, but at its heart, it is really a story about a father trying to reconnect with his daughter across space and time. Matthew McConaughey’s performance as Cooper gives the film much of its emotional weight, balancing its large-scale spectacle with themes of sacrifice, love and family. Even years later, the heartbreaking scene of Cooper breaking down while watching decades of missed messages from his children still hits incredibly hard.

The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

Few modern films capture fatherhood as emotionally as The Pursuit of Happyness. Based on the true story of Chris Gardner, the film follows a struggling San Francisco salesman who loses everything while trying to raise his young son alone. Forced into homelessness while surviving an unpaid stockbroker internship, Gardner’s determination to build a better future for his child gives the film its emotional core. The real-life father-son pairing of Will Smith and Jaden Smith also makes every emotional moment feel even more authentic.

Logan (2017)

Serving as Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine, Logan is ultimately a deeply emotional story about aging, regret and fatherhood. Jackman strips the character down to his most vulnerable form as Logan reluctantly becomes a father figure to the young mutant X-23 (Dafne Keen) while also caring for an aging Professor X (Patrick Stewart), the mentor who once guided him for years. Its quieter emotional moments are what make the film especially memorable, transforming the usual superhero formula into something far more grounded, emotional and human.

Big Fish (2003)

Tim Burton’s Big Fish remains one of the most emotional films ever made about fathers and sons. The story follows Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) as he returns home to reconnect with his dying father whose lifelong habit of telling fantastical and exaggerated stories has long frustrated him. As Will slowly uncovers the truth behind these tales, the film becomes a touching exploration of memory, storytelling and the complicated ways fathers express love beneath all the myth-making.
