With international borders remaining closed and travel restrictions still in place, Rimowa is entering the metaverse this season with the release of the luggage company’s debut NFT (Non-Fungible Token) collection, the first-of-its-kind to come from a luxury travel brand.
Titled ‘Blueprints from the Metaverse’, the German brand’s four-piece block-chain backed collection was created in partnership with design firm Nuova – with each piece inspired by the design of Rimowa’s storied past.
Riffing on Rimowa’s iconic materials and typologies – from the grooved aluminium panels and multi-wheel system, to the leather handles found on the Rimowa classic suitcase collection – the NFT collection is made up of a table, a food cart, a lamp, and a sound system – which Nuova has transformed into digital artworks.
The table, dubbed Telescopic Table, is machined out of solid aerospace grade aluminium, and features telescopic handles and legs that reference 1960s in-flight airplane bars and lounges. Crafted from glass and aerospace grade aluminium, the Glass Service Cart is a mobile dinner service cart with compartments to store 18 serving trays, finished with Rimowa’s iconic leather luggage straps.
Next, the Floor Lamp boasts a polished aluminium tube and base and diffuses LED light through a frosted lens, meant to mimic warm airplane cabin lighting. Finally, the Transparent Speaker System reflects outer space satellites with modern tones of white and gold, wrapped in a translucent glass coating; the Bluetooth-enabled speaker using sound-generating glass from Japan to produce a quality sound.
Rimowa’s Blueprints from the Metaverse’ pieces will go up for auction via NFT marketplace, Rarible, on May 18, for one day only. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the artwork’s creators, as well as a non-profit focused on humanitarian rights.
In addition, Rimowa has ensured carbon neutrality for each NFT by offsetting their carbon footprint with a contribution to the Bull Run Forest Carbon Project.
