With two TV shows coming to our living rooms this year and a possible concert date in Hong Kong, the Korean actor and Super Junior member is turbocharged and not about to slow down. He talks to Zaneta Cheng about what keeps him moving forward, how he hopes to evolve, and why he’s always been serious but also pretty fun

Timing was tight but Choi, now 36 years old with two decades in the entertainment industry as actor and member of Super Junior, one of South Korea’s most successful and enduring K-pop boy bands, hits each shot like he’s been doing this his whole life – which, he basically has been. We ask him for more facial expressions. Choi churns up a spectrum from contemplative to comical. We ask him for more stances. He delivers a range from standing to lying down. We keep asking and he keeps agreeably providing – yet somehow, the entire shoot manages to end half an hour ahead of schedule.

But Choi isn’t one to take a break. The extra time gives way to shooting some behind-the-scenes footage for his eponymous YouTube channel, which the star started in May 2020 and which has since amassed 517,000 subscribers.

It’s fitting then that Super Junior’s latest album is named The Road: Keep on Going Vol 1. There’s no intention to stop or to even slow down. Choi agrees, “The message and the meaning are exactly what the title says – ‘keep on going’. We’re going to keep going and not stop. We wanted this album to look back at the times that we’ve spent together and express what it’s been like to be together up until now and how we’re looking into the future as a collective as well.”

The album is Super Junior’s 11th and it marks the first time SM Entertainment has released an 11th album for any of the artists and groups in its stable. Debuting in 2005, the group is rare in that it has managed to stay together for so long given each member has their own interests. But 17 years on, Super Junior remains fervently well received. Case in point – the almost immediate sell-out of tickets for their Super Show 9 World Tour, which began in Seoul this summer and has travelled to Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur (there are rumours of a Hong Kong leg to follow later this year). Meanwhile, Choi alone has 8.8 million followers on Instagram and the collective Super Junior fandom is larger than the population of smaller countries.

“It’s our first tour since Covid-19, so we were really looking forward to it,” he says. “I don’t think it was just us. It really was everyone including our fans who were waiting and looking forward to an opportunity to see each other again, so this tour is definitely very meaningful and quite emotional. I think it feels bigger because we all had to wait for so long.”

Given each member has their own individual commitments, the tour serves as a kind of reunion. “When we’re working on an album, we don’t really get to spend time together while we record. Everyone has their own schedule, so our times do not overlap that much unless we’re shooting a music video or we’re practising choreography,” Choi explains. “There wasn’t anything exceptional that went into this album but we’ve been working together for so long that we know one another well and respect one another, so that was really fun and the whole process went smoothly.”

In addition to a world tour, Choi has been promoting his newest drama Love is for Suckers, a rom-com he’s starring in alongside Lee Da Hee. In the show, Choi’s Park Jae Hoon, a plastic surgeon, has been friends with Lee Da Hee’s Goo Yereum for over 20 years. The latter is a producer in variety television and both seem to have separately reached an impasse in their love lives until Park’s decision to participate in his friend’s variety show makes them view each other in a new light.

Choi, who usually stars in dramas as a somewhat eccentric, comedic character, was drawn to this project for its fresh perspective on love. “The character has a deeper backstory this time, which I haven’t experienced before,” he says. “I wanted to try it because the character seems very cold on the outside, but he is also very determined and has a sweet side as well. I’ve also always wanted to work with director Choi Kyu Sik, screenwriter Kim Sol Ji and my co-star Lee Da Hee.”

Choi credits the script as the main driver of his character. “I didn’t really have to do anything special. The details were all in the script, so I just dug into it. I didn’t really alter the character in any way because it was the situations that led to the feelings and the responses, so I really just focused on the script,” he explains.

One of these details is that Choi’s character Park has lost both his drive at work and his interest in finding a long-term partner and chooses instead to date casually, which brings about a plot that examines the different romantic or pseudo-romantic entanglements people find themselves in. “There are many different relationships with different people. There are people who like me and there are people I like and each of those relationships is different in its own way,” Choi says. “It wasn’t easy to express those relationships and to be able to act out the different relationships depicted in the storyline was quite memorable for me to do.”

This show contrasts with his most recent televised project, Work Later, Drink Now, which was so successful it’s been renewed for a second season – a rare feat given that Korean dramas rarely renew a show. It showcases Choi at his signature best – a warm-hearted goofball with big energy, contorting his face into myriad, almost slapstick expressions, with more depth than the characters in his shows usually give him credit for. “I don’t think we have a lot in common, but there are probably some similarities,” Choi says.

Both Love is for Suckers and Work Later, Drink Now 2 might then serve as transitions into roles with a bit more heft. Fans of Work Later, Drink Now 2 can expect more of Kang Buk Gu’s backstory. “I think in season two, we get to know each character a bit better. It will explain why Kang Buk Gu has his distinct personality, what his history is and what his backstory is. This season reveals some things we didn’t necessarily expect from the character,” Choi says.

At the heart of these characters, no matter how comedic, how seemingly silly, “there are a lot of aspects to them that I can relate to and understand rather than necessarily sharing similar traits,” Choi explains. “I think I’m able to express these characters because there are a lot that I empathise with, and I think that might be why viewers enjoy them.”

It’s an interesting mix that Choi juggles. Usually impeccably dressed in suits (even during our interview, post-shoot, on the way to the airport, he is dressed in a shirt and jacket), he could be taken for a white-collar professional if not the sort that gets their suits shipped from Savile Row. Only, he is an internationally renowned singer and dancer and in his acting projects, an eccentric with his own brand of comedic timing. “Usually, people think I have this refined and gentle image that is simultaneously a little bit cold,” Choi says. “But I also have this clumsy and goofy side, so in that respect, I’m able to relate to my drama characters.”

His humour can also be seen in his new song “Riding with UV”, in which Choi indulges in his hobby of cycling, collaborating with UV in a multicoloured fluorescent journey across South Korea on their bicycles, to a ballad about nostalgia for past love.

“I’ve always had a serious personality,” Choi admits. “Ever since I was young and until now. I think if I were to tell my younger self anything it would be to buy bitcoin [he laughs] but also to enjoy what I can at the age I’m at instead of always being so serious.”

While Choi finds creative ways to indulge his silly side, he’s also managed to find meaningful outlets for his serious side. A Unicef ambassador since 2010, Choi has spoken out about humanitarian children’s issues such as education, medicine, safety, childhood development and bullying.

The latter is particularly close to his heart. “I can talk all night about cyberbullying and social media. If I had the opportunity to give some advice to people who are following in my path I guess I would let them know three things. First, you are not alone. Second, people who say bad things online would never say them in front of you. This is an important one. And third, life has ups and downs and this too, whatever you’re going through, will pass.”

Choi’s #legends, when asked, are steadfast Biblical figures and titans in their fields. There’s King David, an actual figure from the Bible – “I admire his heart and the way he never changes his principles no matter the situation.” There’s basketball icon Michael Jordan, who’s been Choi’s legend since he was young. And then there’s SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man. “All three of them have something in common: they’re fighters who fight to the very end. They don’t settle for what they have but they fight and strive for their beliefs and to become legends in their fields – not to be number one but to be the pioneer, the only one.”

So it seems Choi, across all aspects of his life, has no intention of slowing down. I ask him if this will be the case 20 years from now. “I’ll be 56!” he proclaims, pausing to consider the question. “I think I’ll continue to work hard and try to overcome whatever comes my way. I want to live a life that I actively lead and not be led. I’ll constantly compete with myself to improve and move forward. And by that, I don’t mean I want to be a leader in my career, but I believe that we all leave a mark in this world. I want to leave a healthy and positive mark. That’s how I hope to be a leader. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

올해 우리 곁을 찾아올 두 개의 드라마와 어쩌면 홍콩에서의 콘서트까지. 터보 엔진을 장착한 한국 배우이자 슈퍼주니어 멤버인 최시원은 계속해서 멈추지 않을 예정입니다. 그리고 그는 자네타 청에게 그의 원동력과, 앞으로의 발전 방향, 그리고 그의 진지하면서도 유쾌한 성격에 대해 들려줍니다

오후 한 시 정도입니다. 아침 8시에 도착해서 시작된 커버 촬영이 끝나고 다른 멤버들과 합류해 인도네시아에서 콘서트를 하기 위해 공항으로 가는 벤 안에 있는 시원과 영상통화를 했습니다. 촬영시간은 촉박했지만, 어느새 20년을 엔터테인먼트 분야에 몸 담고 있는 배우이자 한국에서 가장 성공하고 지금까지도 활동을 이어 나가고 있는 그룹 중 하나인 슈퍼주니어의 멤버인 36살의 시원은 촬영 내내 모든 컷들을 마치 평생 해온 일처럼 찍어내고 있었습니다 – 사실 거의 평생 해왔다고 할 수도 있습니다. 그에게 더 많은 표정을 지어 달라고 했더니 고뇌하는 표정부터 코믹한 표정까지 다양한 표정을 만들어 냈습니다. 서 있는 포즈부터 누워있는 포즈까지 다양하게 해냈죠. 우리는 계속해서 요청을 했고 그는 수긍하며 그대로 전달해주었습니다. 그런데도 어쩐 일인지 계획했던 시간보다 30분이나 일찍 촬영이 끝났습니다.

그렇지만 그는 쉬지 않습니다. 여분의 시간에 지난 2020년 5월에 시작해 벌써 약 51.7만명의 구독자를 가진 그의 유튜브 채널에 올릴 비하인드 씬 촬영을 합니다.

슈퍼주니어의 가장 최신 앨범 이름이 The Road: Keep on Going Vol 1. 인 것도 딱 들어 맞습니다. 그는 멈출 의사도, 그렇다고 느리게 갈 생각도 없습니다. “곡이 담고 있는 의미와 전달하고 싶은 메시지는 제목 그대로예요. Keep on going. 우린 멈추지 않고 계속 전진할 것이다. 지금까지 함께했던 시간들을 되돌아 보면서 우린 지금까지 함께 했었고 그것이 어땠는지 그리고 함께 나아갈 미래를 어떻게 바라보는지 표현하고 싶었어요.”

이번 앨범은 슈퍼주니어의 11번째 앨범이자 SM엔터테인먼트 역대 아트스트 중 최초로 발매되는 정규 앨범입니다. 2005년에 데뷔한 이래로 멤버들 각자의 관심사를 찾아 나가며 지금까지 함께 하는 것도 쉽지는 않지만, 17년이 지난 지금도 슈퍼주니어는 여전히 열렬한 지지를 받고 있습니다. 올 여름 서울에서 시작해 방콕, 싱가포르, 자카르타, 쿠알라룸푸르 그리고 (소문에 의하면) 곧 홍콩까지 이어지는 Super Show 9 World Tour 티켓이 거의 바로 매진된 것만 봐도 알 수 있습니다. 시원의 880만명 팔로워들을 포함해 수백 만명의 인스타그램 팔로워를 가진 슈퍼주니어 팬덤은 일부 작은 나라의 인구 수 보다도 많습니다.

“코로나 이후로 투어는 처음이어서 그런지 굉장히 기대를 많이 했어요,” 그는 말합니다. “저희 뿐만 아니라 저희 팬들을 포함해서 저희를 보기 위해 기다려 주셨던 모든 분들이 계셔서 더 감회가 새롭고 의미가 있었던 것 같아요. 모두가 오랫동안 기다려야 했어서 더 크게 다가오지 않았나 싶어요.”

멤버들 모두 각자 본인들의 일이 있지만 이번 투어로 다시 재회할 수 있었습니다. “앨범 작업 할 때 같이 시간을 보내거나 그러지는 않고, 각자 개인 일정들이 많아서 뮤비 촬영이나 안무 연습 할 때 빼고는 서로 마주치는 시간이 많지는 않아요,” 그는 설명합니다. “이번 앨범을 준비하면서 뭔가 특별한 일이 있었다 보다는 오래 함께 했기 때문에 서로를 알고 존중해주기 때문에 그래서 더 재미있게 잘 했던 것 같아요.”

월드 투어와 더불어 시원은 배우 이다희씨와 함께 곧 새로 방영할 드라마 얼어 죽을 연애 따위 에 대해 들려줍니다. 이번 드라마에서 그는 박재훈이라는 성형외과 의사 역할을 맡았고 구여름이라는 인물로 출연하는 이다희와 20년지기 친구로 나옵니다. 구여름은 리얼리티쇼 피디고 두 인물 모두 각자 나름대로 연애 생활의 교착 상태에 도달한 것으로 보여집니다. 그러다 박재훈이 친구의 예능 프로그램에 출연하게 되면서 서로를 전혀 다르게 보게 된다는 내용입니다.

보통 유쾌하고, 엉뚱한 (괴짜같은) 역할을 맡아온 시원이 이번 작품에 끌리게 된 이유는 사랑에 대한 새로운 관점 때문이라고 말합니다. “이번에 캐릭터가 제가 지금까지 경험을 못했던 딥한 스토리텔링도 있었고 굉장히 차가워 보이지만 강단 있고 스윗한 면도 있어서 도전해보고 싶었던 역할이었어요,” 그는 말합니다. “제가 정말 같이 일해보고 싶었던 최규식 감독님과 김솔지 작가님도 계셨고 배우 이다희씨도 있어서 그래서 해보고 싶었어요.”

시원은 그가 배역에 몰입하게 도와줬던 주 요인은 대본이라고 말합니다. “제가 특별히 한 건 없어요. 대본에 너무 잘 명시가 되어 있어서 대본을 열심히 봤어요. 특별하게 캐릭터를 바꾸거나 그렇지 않았어요. 왜냐하면 상황들이 감정과 반응들을 이끌어 내는 것이어서 그냥 대본에 집중을 했던 것 같아요,” 라고 그는 설명합니다.

이러한 디테일 중에 하나로 시원의 배역 재훈은 일에도, 진지한 연애에도 흥미를 잃어버린 상태에서 (방송에 나가) 가볍게 연애를 하기로 합니다. 그러면서 생기는 다양한 연애 혹은 유사 (가짜) 연애의 관계들이 엉킨 상황에 놓이게 됩니다 . “여러 사람들과의 관계가 있어요. 저를 좋아하는 사람들, 제가 좋아하는 사람들 등 관계들이 모두다른데 그런 관계들을 표현 하는게 쉽지가 않더라고요. 매번 그런 다른 관계들을 표현하는 그 순간들이 기억에 남는 것 같아요.”

이번 작품은 성황리에 잘 끝나서 시즌2까지 예정된 가장 최근 출연 작품인 술꾼도시여자들 과도 대조가 됩니다. 보통 한국 드라마들이 시즌2로 새롭게 나오지 않는 점을 감안하면 이것은 보기 드문 업적이죠. 여기서 시원의 역할은 그의 특징적인, 거의 슬랩스틱에 가까울 정도로 표정을 일그러뜨리는, 에너지 넘치고 엉뚱하고 괴짜 같지만 따듯한 성격을 가진 캐릭터를 보통 그의 다른 역할들보다 더 깊게 보여줍니다. “이런 캐릭터들이 저와 비슷한 부분들이 많은지는 모르겠고 있긴 있겠죠. 사실 저도 나이가 들어서 밝은 역할 하기가 힘드네요,” 그는 웃으며 말합니다.

얼어 죽을 연애 따위 와 술꾼도시여자들2 모두 조금 더 무게 있는 역할들로의 전환점이 될 수도 있습니다. 팬들은 술꾼도시여자들2에서는 강북구의 과거와 이야기에 대해 조금 더 알 수 있기를 기대할 수 있습니다. “시즌2에서는 인물들에 대해 설명을 더 해주는 것 같아요. 왜 강북구가 그런 성격을 가지게 되었는지 그런 스토리텔링이나 과거 이야기들을 하면서 캐릭터에 대해서 몰랐던 부분들을 알게 되는 것 같아요.” 라며 그는 답합니다.

그의 역할들이 코믹하고 바보 같아 보일지라도 “비슷한 점이 많기 보다는 공감가는 부분들이 많은 것 같아요. 공감 되는 부분들이 많아서 표현하기가 쉬웠기 때문에 많은 분들이 좋아해 주셨지 않았을까 싶어요,” 라고 그는 말합니다.

시원이 보여주는 조합은 흥미롭습니다. 주로 완벽하게 차려 입는 시원은 (그는 촬영이 끝나고 인터뷰를 하면서 공항에 가는 차 안에서도 셔츠와 자켓을 입고 있었습니다) 화이트칼라 (사무직 종사자) 로 보거나 혹은 적어도 Savile Row 수트를 받아서 입는 직업을 가진 사람처럼 보입니다. 하지만 그는 국제적으로 유명한 가수이자 댄서이고 그만의 유쾌하고 별난 특색을 가진 연기를 보여주는 배우입니다. “사람들이 저를 젠틀하고 차가운 이미지로 봐주시는데 제가 생각보다 허당끼가 많고 바보 같은 부분들이 있거든요. 그래서 사실 그런 부분이 (캐릭터와) 닮았던 것 같아요.”

그의 유머는 그의 신곡 “Riding with UV” 에서도 볼 수 있습니다. 여기서 그는 그의 취미인 싸이클을 UV와 함께 타고 한국을 가로 지르며 지난 사랑에 관한 향수를 담은 발라드로의  다채롭고 화사한 여정을 떠납니다.

“저는 언제나 진지한 성격이었어요,” 라고 시원은 말합니다. “어렸을 때나 지금이나 저는 진지했던 성격인데, 어린 저에게 한마디를 한다면 비트코인을 사라고 할 것 같아요 [웃음] 그리고 항상 진지하게 사는 대신 조금 더 그 나이 때에 맞는 걸 즐기며 재밌게 살라고 얘기했을 것 같아요.”

조금은 무모하고 재밌게 살아가기 위해 새로운 길을 걸어가면서도, 시원은 진지한 그의 성격에 맞게 의미있는 삶을 살고 있습니다. 2010년도부터 유니세프의 엠버서더로서 활약을 펼치고 있는 그는 교육, 약, 안전, 아동기 발달과 학대 등에 대한 아이들의 인도주의적 주제들에 목소리를 내고 있습니다. 

그리고 후자에 나오는 이 문제는 시원에게 와닿는 문제 입니다. “사이버불리잉과 온라인 관련해서 정말 밤새 얘기할 수 있어요. 제가 아이돌 후배분들한테 얘기를 한마디 할 기회가 있다면 세가지가 있을 것 같아요. 첫번째는 혼자가 아니다. 두번째는 그렇게 온라인에서 욕하시는 분들은 실제로는 뭐라고 못해요. 그걸 알면 좋을 것 같아요. 그리고 세번째로 모든 것이 희노애락이 있듯이 무엇을 겪고 있든 이 또한 결국 지나간다”

#legends 를 묻는 질문에 그는 변함 없이 성경 인물들과 본인들의 분야의 타이탄 같은 사람을 답했습니다. 성경에 실제로 나오는 다윗 왕이 있습니다. “다윗 왕의 마음이 멋있는 것 같아요. 절대 어떤 상황이라도 흔들리지 않는 마음이 멋있는 것 같아요.” 어릴 적부터 시원의 우상이던 농구의 아이콘 마이클 조던도 있고 SM 엔터테인먼트의 창시자인 이수만선생님도 그의 #legend 입니다. “세 분 다 공통점이 있어요. 끝까지 싸우시는 분들이에요. 안주하거나 만족하지 않고 본인들이 믿는 것들 그리고 정말 레전드가 되기 위해 끝까지 싸우는 분들이에요. 넘버 원이 아닌 Only One 이 되려고 하는 분들이에요”

시원은 앞으로도 멈추거나 속도를 낮출 계획이 없어 보입니다. 20년 후에도 그럴 것인지 물어봤습니다. 그랬더니 “56살이겠네요!” 라고 답하며 그는 잠시 고민했습니다. “여전히 열심히 사는 사람이지 않을까요. 어떤 것을 마주해도 이기기 위해서. 리드 당하는 삶이 아닌 리드하는 삶을 살고 싶어요. 남들과 그리고 제 자신과 계속 경쟁하면서 계속 발전하는 삶을 살고 있지 않을까요. 자기 분야에서의 성공이 아니라 우리는 살면서 세상에 어떤 흔적(덴트)를 남기는데 저는 세상에 건강하고 긍정적인 흔적을 남기고 싶어요. 그런 흔적 남기는 부분에서 리드를 하고 싶어요. 그러려고 노력을 많이 하고요.”
