The release of Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi blockbuster “Disclosure Day” this month has pushed alien conspiracies and extraterrestrial mysteries back into the spotlight. If the film’s mix of first contact, government secrecy and cosmic paranoia left you wanting more, these five sci-fi films offer fascinatingly different takes on humanity’s encounters with the unknown

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

For more classic Spielberg alien wonder, Close Encounters of the Third Kind should be your first stop. The film follows ordinary people whose lives are transformed after witnessing mysterious UFO activity, including a father consumed by an unexplained obsession and a mother searching for her missing son. Blending awe, paranoia and curiosity, it remains one of cinema’s most influential first-contact stories and a defining example of Spielberg’s fascination with the unknown.

Arrival (2016)

Moving on to a more recent release, Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival offers one of the most distinctive takes on alien contact in sci-fi cinema. The film follows linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) as she is recruited to communicate with mysterious extraterrestrial visitors after twelve giant spacecraft appear across Earth. As she works to decipher their language amid rising global tensions, an unexpected discovery reshapes her understanding of time, turning the film into a powerful story about love, loss and human connection.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Another Steven Spielberg classic – and arguably the most iconic alien film ever made – E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial takes a refreshingly optimistic approach to extraterrestrial life. The story follows a lonely young boy who secretly befriends a stranded alien hiding on Earth while government agents slowly close in around them. Beneath its family-friendly surface lies a heartfelt story about friendship and acceptance, anchored by one of the most emotional human-alien relationships in sci-fi cinema.

Nope (2022)

Taking a turn into sci-fi horror, Nope – directed by Jordan Peele, the filmmaker behind Get Out and Us – offers a more unsettling take on extraterrestrial encounters. The film follows horse-wrangling siblings OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer) as they investigate a mysterious presence above their remote California ranch after a series of deadly incidents. Mixing sci-fi, horror and social commentary, the film unfolds into a visually striking mystery that keeps viewers questioning what is really lurking in the sky.

Project Hail Mary (2026)

One of the standout alien films of recent years, Project Hail Mary offers a fresh and surprisingly heartfelt take on first contact. Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, the film follows former science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who awakens alone aboard a spacecraft on a mission to save humanity from a mysterious organism draining the sun’s energy. Along the way, he encounters an alien traveller named Rocky, leading to an emotional story about friendship, trust and cooperation across species.
