Following its recent cinema release, “Michael” has quickly become one of the most talked-about films of the moment, with much of the attention on its portrayal of the late King of Pop. At the centre is Jaafar Jackson, whose transformation has drawn widespread attention for its striking accuracy, placing him firmly in the spotlight. Here are five things to know about the rising star behind the role
He comes from the Jackson family

Jaafar Jackson is not just portraying Michael Jackson – he is part of the family itself. As the son of Jermaine Jackson, Michael’s older brother and a member of The Jackson 5, he carries a direct link to the legacy he brings to the screen. Having grown up within that world, his understanding comes from lived familiarity rather than observation, offering a perspective few actors could match.
He has been performing since childhood
Like his uncle and father, performance has long been part of Jaafar’s life. He has been singing, playing piano and dancing since the age of 12, gradually developing his own musical foundation and style. In 2019, he released his debut single “Got Me Singing,” along with a 12 million view music video. That background becomes essential in Michael, where performance is inseparable from character, allowing him to move, sing and command the stage with a natural presence.
He spent years preparing for the role

The family connection may offer a natural advantage, but Jaafar’s transformation into Michael was shaped by years of preparation. In interviews, he has said he spent over two years training with coaches to refine Michael’s voice, vocal delivery and signature movements before filming began. Beyond technique, he also studied his uncle’s personal writings, including journals, poems, mantras and affirmations, to better understand his mindset. He even adopted similar habits, placing affirmations on walls and mirrors during rehearsals to fully immerse himself in the role.
He had a close relationship with his uncle

Long before taking on the role, Jaafar had a close relationship with Michael during his childhood. He has recalled visits to Neverland Ranch, where he spent time playing, watching movies and joining family gatherings, especially during the holidays. Those experiences shaped his understanding of Michael beyond the public image. Reflecting on his uncle’s passing in 2009, he described it as deeply difficult, adding that he wishes he could have asked him more about the career he would later pursue.
Michael marks his acting debut

Despite the scale of the production, Michael marks Jaafar’s acting debut. He was first approached for the role by producer Graham King in 2020 and, instead of a conventional audition, sent a voice note of himself in character as his uncle – an approach that impressed King enough to move him forward. It places him in the unusual position of entering acting through one of the most recognisable figures in global pop culture. With early reception trending positive and talk of a potential second instalment, he appears set to grow further as an actor alongside his music career.
