With his latest romantic comedy “Perfect Crown” now streaming on Disney+ from April 10, Byeon Woo-seok is once again in the spotlight. Set in a modern constitutional monarchy, the drama pairs him with IU in a royal romance that has quickly gained traction with audiences. As the series continues to build momentum, here are five things to know about the actor at the centre of the buzz
He began his career in modelling

Before acting, Byeon Woo-seok entered the industry as a model after being scouted, making his initial debut in 2010. The start, however, was short-lived, and he later stepped away to complete his military service. It was only after joining YG KPLUS that his modelling career took shape. From 2014, he gained visibility alongside peers such as Nam Joo-hyuk and Jang Ki-yong, with whom he remains close. He soon became a regular at Seoul Fashion Week and even made his international runway debut at Milan Fashion Week Men’s in 2015.
His success didn’t happen overnight

Although now widely recognised, Byeon’s rise took time. After making his acting debut in Dear My Friends in 2016, he spent several years taking on smaller and supporting roles across different dramas. It wasn’t until later projects such as Record of Youth (2020) and 20th Century Girl (2022) that he began to gain wider attention. Nearly a decade into his acting career, his breakthrough came with his first leading role in Lovely Runner (2024), where his portrayal of youth and first love resonated strongly with audiences and pushed him to a new level of visibility.
He moves between romance and darker roles

While Byeon is often recognised for his romantic leads, his range extends beyond that. He has also taken on more complex, darker roles, most notably in Strong Girl Nam-soon (2023), where he plays the composed yet quietly menacing CEO Ryu Shi-oh. The role reveals a different side of his acting, highlighting his versatility and showing that he brings more than just screen presence to his performances.
He is committed to charity work

Beyond acting, Byeon has also become known for his involvement in charitable causes. Earlier this year, he donated 100 million won to GFoundation to support girls from low-income households in Korea, followed by another 100 million won contribution to Severance Hospital for paediatric care. These build on a number of donations he has made over the years. Notably, many of these contributions were made quietly and only revealed later, reflecting a personal and consistent commitment rather than one driven by visibility.
His biggest project is yet to come

Following a steady rise in recognition, Byeon is now set to lead a major live-action adaptation of the widely popular action-fantasy series Solo Leveling, taking on the role of Sung Jin-woo in a story that traces his “zero-to-hero” journey. With a massive global fanbase already established through the original series and its anime adaptation, expectations are high. The scale of the production, combined with his central role, is set to mark a clear step forward in his international reach and visibility beyond the traditional K-drama audience.
