For her debut runway season, Kaia Gerber opened for Calvin Klein’s Spring 2018 show in New York and Chanel for its Spring 2018 collection in Paris. Not to mention—walking for the likes of Fenty x Puma by Rihanna, Saint Laurent, Versace, Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang. She’s essentially a younger doppelgänger of supermodel mum Cindy Crawford but has been making waves in the fashion industry all on her own with over 2.7 million followers on Instagram.
That was three months ago. The 16-year-old model is now trying her luck as a designer with Karl Lagerfeld for a capsule collection of ready-to-wear clothes and accessories. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the Karl Lagerfeld x Kaia Gerber collection will blend “Lagerfeld’s Parisian chic aesthetic and Gerber’s signature West coast casual style.” The collection is set to launch in fall later this year online on Karl.com and in Karl Lagerfeld stores.
Comparisons have already been made with Tommy Hilfiger’s successful collaboration with Gigi Hadid and how Gerber, who is leading the way as a young second-gen star (others include Lily-Rose Depp, also a favourite of Chanel, and Hailey Baldwin), might eclipse this given how she dominated the runway last September and October. Indeed, as Kendall Jenner said to Love Magazine about Gerber: “Listen, we’re all trying to get all our work in now before she hits the scene. When that happens, we’ll all go broke!”
It’s pretty much official. The hottest thing right now are the teens ruling both Instagram and the runway – be it social media sensations or fashion influencers who just happen to have celebrity parents.
Sofia Richie (who’s also made headlines for briefly dating Justin Bieber and now Scott Disick), Jaden Smith (a face for Louis Vuitton), Brooklyn Beckham, Rafferty Law, Sistine Stallone and Gerber’s brother Presley are just a few more to add to the list. Even Paris Jackson is making her mark on the fashion world and has now modelled for Chanel and Calvin Klein.
