Montblanc: Iced Sea collection expands with new 38mm models

Swiss watchmaker introduces smaller size and zero oxygen technology to popular diving watch line

Montblanc has unveiled four new gender-neutral models in its Iced Sea Automatic Date collection, featuring a reduced 38mm case size and innovative zero oxygen technology. The new watches aim to appeal to a wider audience while enhancing performance in extreme environments.

The Iced Sea collection, launched in 2022, gained attention for its dials inspired by glacial ice from the Mer de Glace on the Mont-Blanc Massif. The new 38mm models expand on this design, offering two new dial colours: white and light blue.

Montblanc employs a technique called gratté-boisé to create the glacier pattern on the dials. This process takes four times longer than standard dial production and involves over 30 steps. The result mimics the texture of glacial ice, with an interlocking network of crystals frozen in time.

The white dial marks the first pure white colour in the Iced Sea range. The light blue version features a sfumato effect, a smoky aesthetic derived from an Italian technique where colours gradually merge.

Zero oxygen technology debuts in the Iced Sea line with these new models. This feature removes all oxygen inside the watch case, providing benefits for explorers in harsh conditions. The absence of oxygen eliminates fogging during temperature changes and prevents oxidation, extending component life and maintaining precision.

Each watch comes with a certificate confirming the zero oxygen sealing. This invisible technology adds a layer of durability to the timepieces.

The new Iced Sea models meet ISO 6425 standards for diving watches. They feature unidirectional rotatable bezels matching the dial colour, indicating diving time. White versions have ceramic bezel inserts, while blue versions use anodized aluminium.

All dials include white luminescent hands, indexes and a luminous dot at 12 o'clock on the bezel. The Montblanc Iced Sea logo appears at 6 o'clock.

The caseback features a 3D engraving of a scuba diver and an iceberg. This design uses structured metal to create matte and polished finishes, adding depth to the image.

Buyers can choose between a stainless steel bracelet or a colour-matched rubber strap. Both options offer easy interchangeability and fine adjustment systems. The rubber straps now include a 3D glacier pattern on the inside for improved comfort and breathability.

The watches run on Montblanc's MB 24.17 automatic movement, providing a 38-hour power reserve. They display hours, minutes, seconds, and the date at 3 o'clock.

Montblanc subjects each timepiece to its Laboratory Test, ensuring resistance to shocks, magnetism, temperature changes, and water pressure up to 300 metres. The test also verifies reinforced fasteners for enhanced security.

The new 38mm Iced Sea models balance aesthetics with practical features for diving enthusiasts and watch collectors. By combining unique dial designs, robust construction, and innovative technology, Montblanc aims to strengthen its position in the sports watch market.

Prices for the new models range from HK$26,000 for versions with rubber straps to HK$27,500 for those with stainless steel bracelets.

Montblanc's expansion of the Iced Sea line reflects a growing trend in the luxury watch industry towards smaller case sizes and increased functionality. The introduction of zero oxygen technology also demonstrates the brand's commitment to innovation in watchmaking.

As the collection evolves, Montblanc continues to draw inspiration from its namesake mountain and surrounding glaciers. This connection to nature and exploration remains central to the brand's identity in the competitive world of high-end timepieces.
