The 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards saw the best performances on film and television being acknowledged by fellow actors, with the cast of Oppenheimer, The Bear, Succession, and Beef taking home awards.

The cast of Oppenheimer won for best ensemble, while Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. nabbed wins for their lead and supporting roles in the biopic, respectively. Meanwhile, a drunk Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us claimed a surprise win for best male actor in a drama series, beating out three other actors from Succession, which includes his “frienemy” Kieran Culkin.

Steven Yeun and Ali Wong Beef took the male and female acting awards in a television movie or limited series for their stellar turns on Beef. Another big winner was The Bear, which picked up three awards, including for comedy ensemble, best male actor in a comedy series (won by Jeremy Allen White), and best female actor in a comedy series (for Ayo Edebiri).

A nod was also given to all actors who stood in solidarity with the recent 118-day Hollywood strike in an introduction by Idris Elba. Fran Drescher, SAG-AFTRA president, also thanked members for their efforts that resulted in a “historic” pact for fairer contract terms. “You are the champions,” said Drescher, star of The Nanny. “You survived the longest strike in our union’s history with courage and conviction.”

At the awards ceremony, Barbra Streisand received SAG’s life achievement honour. The legendary multi-hyphenate entertainer took the stage as her song “The Way We Were” from the movie of the same name played. After accepting the accolade presented to her by Jennifer Aniston and Bradley Cooper, Streisand took time to reminisce about being a young girl in Brooklyn with Hollywood dreams despite not looking like any of the film stars at the time.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph of The Holdovers, who won best female actor in a supporting role, proved that it was truly an event for actors by actors when she paid tribute to the profession in her winning speech. “In what other profession are people able to live so many lives and touch so many hearts of those they have never gotten to meet?”
