Wheelock unites art and luxury at Ho Kan@Hong Kong exhibition

Apr 04, 2025

The exhibition celebrates Ho Kan’s artistic legacy while highlighting Wheelock’s commitment to blending culture with high-end living.

At the Peak Salon at Wheelock House in Central, visitors gathered for the opening of Ho Kan@Hong Kong. The exhibition, presented by Wheelock Properties and Wharf Holdings in collaboration with Chini Gallery, showcases 40 works by the 92-year-old Chinese abstract master Ho Kan. Nearly 90 per cent of these pieces are being exhibited globally for the first time, offering audiences a rare glimpse into his artistic evolution.

Ho, known for his distinctive geometric abstraction, spent five decades in Italy, absorbing Western influences while staying rooted in Chinese traditions. His works reflect a seamless dialogue between East and West, combining vibrant colours and structured forms. Over the past six years, his paintings have appreciated tenfold in value, earning places in prestigious art collections worldwide.

The artist himself attended the VIP preview and opening reception to share insights into his creative process. “Art is a bridge,” he said. “It connects cultures, people, and ideas.”

This ethos resonates deeply with Wheelock Properties’ vision. Stephen Ng, chairman and managing director of Wharf Holdings, emphasised the synergy between art and architecture during his remarks at the event. He drew parallels between Ho's geometric abstraction and the design inspiration behind Wheelock’s latest luxury development, One Plantation Road on The Peak.

“The vibrant landscapes of the South of France inspired both Ho Kan’s work and our Peak Collection project,” Ng explained. “This cross-cultural dialogue encapsulates contemporary aesthetics and enriches both art and living spaces.”

One Plantation Road is a collection of 20 detached houses designed to blend artistry with functionality. The showpiece, House No. 1, boasts over 6,000 square feet of living space complemented by a garden, courtyard, and garage, interiors by renowned French designer Jean-Louis Deniot.

Ricky Wong, vice chairman and managing director of Wheelock Properties, highlighted how art informs every detail of their developments. “We believe premium spaces amplify the allure of art,” he said. “Our goal is to create homes that inspire.”

While the exhibition serves as a platform for Ho's work, it also reflects Wheelock’s broader commitment to integrating culture into urban living. Past initiatives include photography competitions and public art projects that engage local communities and celebrate Hong Kong’s evolving identity.

Ho Kan@Hong Kong runs until May 30 on an appointment-only basis. For visitors, it offers more than an artistic experience - it invites reflection on how art can shape the spaces we inhabit. As Ho Kan remarked during his opening speech: “Art is not separate from life; it is life.”
