Loro Piana has unveiled the 2026 edition of the Loro Piana Knit Design Award, the maison’s prestigious international platform dedicated to celebrating the artistry of knitwear, a craft that has long stood at the heart of its identity. Marking the award’s 10th anniversary, this year’s edition arrives under the theme “Knitting Light – Craft on the Evolution of Colour”, presented in Milan as an ongoing dialogue between the future and living craftsmanship.

What continues to distinguish Loro Piana from many luxury houses is its understanding that materials are never merely components of clothing, but vessels of culture, knowledge, and refinement passed carefully through generations of human hands.

As such, each year’s brief carries a certain complexity, and this year is no exception. Students from some of the world’s leading fashion institutions were invited to create works using mélange and mouliné yarns crafted from the maison’s exceptional cashmere fibres, while interpreting the notions of “light” and “colour” through their own contemporary textile language.

One of the most compelling aspects of this year’s award lies in the way young creatives from different cultural backgrounds were asked to work with some of the most delicate and sophisticated materials in the world of textiles. They were not simply encouraged to be modern, but challenged to understand craftsmanship deeply enough to carry it meaningfully into the future.

The list of participating institutions — from Parsons School of Design and Bunka Fashion College to École Duperré Paris and The Swedish School of Textiles — reflects how the Knit Design Award has evolved into an important global platform for emerging design talent. More importantly, it has helped reposition knitwear, once considered a niche discipline, as a serious field of creative and technical innovation once again.

The setting of Galleria Rossana Orlandi further reinforced this vision beautifully. Far from being a conventional exhibition space, the gallery has long served as a meeting point between art, design, and cultural experimentation. By presenting the students’ knitwear creations within this context, the garments transcended the notion of fashion products alone, instead becoming conceptual objects capable of communicating with the same emotional depth as contemporary art.
