After eight weeks with viewers as Chae Yoo-jin on Netflix hit Forecasting Love and Weather, the Korean star speaks to Zaneta Cheng about why she continues to push boundaries be it in acting or other creative pursuits

Fresh off a successful run in the Korean television and Netflix series Forecasting Love and Weather, Yura (born Kim Ah-young) is back on set for her second #legend cover shoot. It’s a decidedly more grown-up aesthetic this time around compared to the more youthful, girlier look the actress sported on our March 2020 cover.

After all, Yura has since weathered some storms both as herself through the pandemic and as Chae Yoo-jin in Forecasting Love and Weather. “I had good memories shooting with #legend two years ago, so I couldn’t wait to shoot again,” she says from the set. The atmosphere is fun and affable, and the star has been game to brave whatever elements we throw her way. “I think this was another great shoot and I really like the results. It’s been a while since I shot a fashion editorial so I hope #legend readers will enjoy it too.”

Yura’s willingness to try her hand at anything new might explain her decision to take on a character that the actress admits was tricky to play. “Yoo-jin was a character who suddenly appeared and came between Jin Ha-kyung and Han Ki-jun so it was inevitable that viewers would find her annoying,” Yura says.

The arc of Yura’s character Yoo-jin, a reporter on the weather beat, traces the character’s decision to embark on a relationship with the man (played by Yoon Park) of a long-term couple who work at the Korean Meteorological Institute and the ups and downs of a marriage that started off as an affair.

Yura’s efforts to portray her character as an imperfect human striving for her own ideals gave Yoo-jin a complexity to what otherwise could have been a two-dimensional villain. “I tried hard and put a lot of thought into understanding her and sympathising with her because I understood that she also had an image of a family that she wanted,” she says.

“Yoo-jin is very honest about every aspect of her life and is ambitious in her work. In many ways, she’s very different from my own personality but when I would play this role, I would try to erase myself to bring out her personality. I thought a lot about her life beyond the script, imagining her background, how she grew up and what thoughts she might have when it came to her family.”

Having broken into acting at 20 years old with Chinese drama Secret Angel, the now 29-year-old has had multiple roles in television series. From playing a sweet daughter in the 2013 sitcom Reckless Family to a teacher in 2017’s Hip Hop Teacher to an ambitious actress doing whatever it takes to become famous in Radio Romance, Yura remains humble despite her near decade-long acting career.

Taking on characters with more complexity in each project, the actress is keen to continue pushing the bounds of her craft. “My very first acting role was in Secret Angel and that was a big challenge for me. I was so nervous because it was my first try and I was much younger then,” Yura recalls with a laugh. “Of course, acting is still difficult and every line I read continues to make me think hard but that’s the appeal of it and why I want to keep acting.

“I have learned so much as an entertainer and especially through filming Forecasting Love and Weather where I was able to think deeply about the process of growing while engaging in human relationships. There were also many moments during filming where the director would give me detailed instructions for the scene and each time, I learned something new. It was also great to talk to my co-stars about our scenes.”

Of her co-stars, which included Park Min-young, Song Kang and Yoon Park, Yura had only worked with Yoon prior to Forecasting Love and Weather in Radio Romance. Undaunted by the heavier scenes she would have to film with all three of her co-stars, Yura began this project as with all her others – by getting to know them. The key to good chemistry, according to the star, is communication.

“I’m not just saying this but I can honestly say that Park Min-young, Song Kang and Yoon Park were really the best combination of actors,” Yura expresses enthusiastically. It’s a bold statement for an actress whose scenes with all three of her co-stars asked for delicate handling around confrontation and conflict. “It was the first time I met Park and I learned a lot from her acting and really got to know her. It was also always fun to shoot with Song and I got to really see his passion for acting and how hard he works at it.”

As for Yoon, her main partner in the series, Yura is full of praise as well as gratitude. “I’m glad that Yoon Park was my counterpart. We’ve worked together before in another project so it felt much more comfortable, but it wasn’t just that – I think he really brought out the characteristics of his character,” she says.

Playing husband and wife in a marriage beset by insecurity and miscommunication meant that the pair of actors required even more discussion before each scene to really draw out the complicated emotions they needed to portray. “I could find [Yoon’s] character funny and feel sorry for him because he portrayed his character so well. We talked a lot before and during filming about how best to get into other characters of Chae Yoo-jin and Han Ki-joon. We gave each other a lot of advice and had many conversations about the underlying feelings of a certain situation and how we should express them.”

For the actress, every moment spent with people on set and in production is a learning experience. She’s keen to keep going. “Normally, we all live busy lives and can’t really see into or experience the lives of others. Through acting, I get to experience things that I wouldn’t otherwise experience in my own life,” Yura explains. “It’s fascinating that I can have thoughts that I would never have otherwise, that I can have a certain job that I wouldn’t otherwise know about or that I can even be completely immersed in another life.”

Thinking back to when she was just Kim Ah-young, an art student at Ulsan Arts High School, dancing, drawing and meeting new people, Yura credits her career with not only expanding her horizons but also with giving her a full life. “If I had lived my life as Kim Ah-young in Ulsan, I wouldn’t have met the members of Girls’ Day [the all-girl pop group that Yura made her entertainment debut with in 2010] and all the characters I played in dramas.”

The curious thing about Yura, however, is that while so many performers shed their past lives like snakes shed skin once they set foot into entertainment, Yura has held on to her passions. Remarking that she spent most of her time at home during the pandemic and that two years into such a reclusive lifestyle began to take its toll, Yura turned to painting and poetry to help pass the time.

“I did my best to fill that time with artistic work and things I didn’t have the opportunity to do while I was busy. Even though it was small, I had the opportunity to hold a small art exhibition and to also publish a poetry anthology with the poet Na Tae-joo,” she says. For an actress whose devotion to her profession is so obvious – Yura’s hopes for her art is “to meet as many actors as possible and work on projects in all kinds of genres rather than picking one particular actor to work with or confine to one genre” – she’s refreshingly genuinely multifaceted.

The pandemic-induced collective immobility saw Yura try to find a form of escape through art. “I’ve always liked the poems of Na Tae-joo. When I received the proposal to present my paintings together with the work of a poet I admire, it was an incredible honour to be invited and a pleasure to do so,” she recalls. “The title of the anthology is Travels in Different Seasons. In the midst of this pandemic, I thought it would be nice to show my paintings alongside poems that portray different seasons so that readers could have a sense of travel as they flip the pages.”

And while Yura is constantly challenging herself to present different sides of herself to her audiences – “showing something new is important but it’s also important to work hard on the things I’m already doing like singing, acting, art and variety shows, and do my best to be acknowledged in those areas” – she remains remarkably grounded. Asked for her #legend, the actress lists off “family, friends and Nacho, Kancho and Hucho (my dogs)” with laughter.

She’s one to dig into galbijjim and spicy Korean dishes and, on sunny days, goes for drives or rides her bike along the Han River. On rainy days, she stays at home ticking off dramas and movies that she’s not had the chance to see. She paints and plays computer games in her free time – and has a soft spot for Busan and Jeju Island, where she spent time during filming for Forecasting Love and Weather because the local delicacies are worth travelling the distance for.

Her goals are simple – to keep acting, to keep growing and “to continue my artistic works and activities that I hope can bring warmth to many people”. Perhaps it’s the balance between work and self that Yura has grown into that makes her an actress we want to keep watching regardless of rain or shine.
