Mandarin Oriental to unveil luxury resort on Mexico's Riviera Maya

Sep 25, 2024

A new pinnacle of opulence is set to grace the Caribbean coastline, promising an exquisite blend of local culture and world-class hospitality. With the opening of a new Mandarin Oriental property, the hotel asserts its bespoke dominance in the area

In a significant announcement that has captured the attention of luxury travel enthusiasts, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has revealed plans for a stunning new resort on Mexico's Riviera Maya, slated to open its doors in 2028.

This ambitious project will showcase the brand's legendary service while paying homage to the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Nestled within a sprawling 680-acre masterplan known as Kanai, the resort will be strategically located just a 30-minute drive from Cancun Airport and a mere ten minutes from the vibrant heart of Playa del Carmen. The design ethos prioritises environmental sustainability, with only 9 per cent of the land allocated for buildings and roads, ensuring that the surrounding lush jungle and protected mangrove reserve remain untouched.

The resort promises 120 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites, each featuring private pools and breathtaking views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. The interiors, crafted by renowned New York-based studio Meyer Davis, will blend seamlessly with nature, incorporating local materials such as marble, wood, and leather alongside textiles woven by local artisans.

A standout feature of this development is its commitment to art and culture. Acclaimed Mexican artist Bosco Sodi has been appointed the art curator for the project, infusing it with his unique vision that embraces the Japanese Wabi Sabi philosophy—finding beauty in imperfection.

Dining at Mandarin Oriental Kanai will be a culinary journey in itself, offering a diverse array of international cuisines alongside locally inspired dishes crafted from fresh, regional ingredients. Guests can expect dining options ranging from speciality restaurants to casual beachside cafés.

For families seeking adventure or relaxation alike, the resort will feature three outdoor pools tailored for various experiences, alongside a fully equipped Kid's Club designed to engage children of all ages. The comprehensive Spa at Mandarin Oriental will serve as a sanctuary of wellness, offering a range of treatments inspired by both local traditions and global practices.

As Riviera Maya continues to enchant visitors with its pristine beaches and rich Mayan history - home to iconic archaeological sites such as Chichen Itza and Tulum - this new resort is poised to elevate luxury hospitality in the region. With its focus on cultural integration and environmental stewardship, Mandarin Oriental Kanai promises to be more than just a place to stay; it aims to offer an immersive experience that resonates deeply with its guests.

As anticipation builds for its opening in 2028, this luxurious oasis is sure to become a coveted destination for discerning travellers seeking both relaxation and cultural enrichment in one of Mexico's most picturesque locales.
