From London, Milan to Paris, men’s month is finally over. All the biggest names showcased their Fall/Winter 2018 offerings, giving us a look at the trends that are going to dictate the style set in winter. However, some of the biggest news happened off the runway – such as Kim Jones leaving Louis Vuitton and Hedi Slimane taking over at Céline. Despite this, there were some huge trends that made headlines, for example, Uggs, which are (apparently) making a comeback.

Scroll through to see some of the trends that caught our eyes this season and might just end up in your closet:

A-COLD-WALL*

Slick Outerwear

Whenever it’s the Fall/Winter season, outerwear always plays a big part. Well for this year: think shiny, slick coats. Sure, it can look like a garbage bag but with the right tailoring and fit, you can look more Matrix than roadside waste. A-COLD-WALL*’s Samuel Ross had models walk down the runway in both poncho-like, PVC black creations as well as more tailored, patent black trench coats. Hermès did a more demure version with brown jackets and layered vests. John Galliano at Maison Margiela has layered trench and raincoat creations with a transparent, plastic raincoat as the highlight. You can’t go wrong with a shiny top coat come winter.

OAMC

Boxy Coats

Aside from the shine, silhouettes came in all sizes this season. Some brands chose to continue with the oversized trend such as OAMC, where coats were as boxy as they come. Prada revitalised its Sport archives, which included bold, dark and boxy neoprene jackets. Aside from that, Y/Project had some killer oversized denim jackets (with shearling!)

Y/Project

Cinched Waists

Speaking about Y/Project, the brand also brought back long trench coats with cinched waists courtesy of a belt. But that wasn’t the only brand that showed off this look – Yohji Yamamoto was a fan of the look, as well as Ann Demeulemeester. Martine Rose brought about biker jacket-like denim pieces that featured belts as well.

OFF-WHITE

Dressed Up but Casual

In terms of overall trends, even the most traditional brands strayed away from simple suits. With the infiltration of all things casual, athleisure and streetwear, everyone just wants to be comfortable – and who can blame them? Lanvin had classic button-up shirts, but matched them with loose jackets, turtlenecks, flowy trousers while Issey Miyake did the same with collared shirts under sporty, puffy winter coats. Of course, Dior Homme still had suits – it is one of their signatures after all – but Kris Van Assche infused his own punk-inspired aesthetic as usual. Most surprisingly, streetwear darling Virgil Abloh went “business casual” (literally) this season. His collection was a casual take on all things office.

Prada

Utilitarian

Fashion can be aspirational sometimes, but this season was all about being utilitarian. Junya Watanabe showed off simple outfits with functional coats – from Canada Goose to a killer collaboration with The North Face. For Kim Jones’ last show with Louis Vuitton, the designer had monogrammed leggings under shorts, to big, roomy backpacks. At Sacai, coats had pockets and zippers all over, while Prada was all about Sport.

Louis Vuitton

Hiking Boots

Speaking about utilitarian, one of the biggest footwear trends were hiking boots. Real, lace-up hiking boots. Louis Vuitton, Junya Watanabe and Sacai are just a few of the ones who did it well.

Vetements

Socks and Sandals

So dad-core style has been a thing for awhile, but it’s definitely here to stay for the moment. If you thought chunky dad shoes were too much, for Fall/Winter we’re looking at socks and sandals. This traditionally “unfashionable” style showed up at Vetements, Maisone Kitsuneé and Kolor.

Y/Project

Uggs are Back

And the most surprising footwear trend of all: Uggs. They didn’t show up just once during fashion week – but twice. Y/Project debuted a stunning, thigh-high, oversized style of the shearling boot, in addition to a bold, layered, furry style. Sacai’s Chitose Abe took a more traditional approach with the Ugg, remixing the classic short style by adding on colorful socks. Anticipate Uggs to be huge next winter.
