David Ho gives you the latest dining recommendations in Hong Kong for April 2025

Mandarin Grill + Bar

In April, Mandarin Grill is playing host to a couple of guest chefs. First up is Chef George Lyon, the Head Chef of Broadway at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi and a protégé of Gordon Ramsay. Here from April 9 to 12 only, we had a taste of his ingredient-driven take on brasserie classics and totally get how he led Broadway to Michelin acclaim in under a year.

For lunch (two-course at HK$668 and three-course at HK$778), we opted for an appetizer of Heirloom Carrot paired with Roasted Hazelnuts, Tarragon, Tiete De Moines where the carrot’s crunch was nicely complemented by the natural sweetness of the hazelnut base. Our main of Ravioli of Chanterelles Morels was served on a bed of morels and doused in an Aged Parmesan Foam. The plus-sized ravioli popped like a boba bubble, and each bite was a cheesy delight. The desserts were very innovative, especially with their ice-cream pairings. One was a 54 percent chocolate tart served a Jerusalem Artichoke Ice-cream, which reminded us of tapioca chips in flavour. There was also Tarte Tatin with Sour Cream Ice-cream as well as our favourite, a Paris-Brest pastry with Pistachio and Tonka Bean.

If you can’t make it in time for lunch or dinner with Lyon, Mandarin Grill is also hosting Chef Christiaan Stoop from April 24 to 26. The Executive Chef of the 3-Michelin-starred Taian Table, Shanghai is bringing his fine-dining innovation to Hong Kong for the first time. On 24 April, he will be joined by Chef Stefan Stiller, founder of Taian Table, for a one-night-only appearance.

Pirata

It’s all about Easter offerings this month. If you are having brunch at Pirata (HK$328 per person) on April 20, you can indulge in a luscious Choco Ganache, harmoniously paired with almond crumble, red berry coulis and pistachio ice cream for a playful twist. There will also be a giant chocolate Easter egg for some (literally) smashing fun. Bring your kids and grab the giant hammer to crack open the egg for a surprise that will delight young and old alike.

181 at Fortnum and Mason

181 at Fortnum & Mason unveils a bountiful afternoon tea creation for adults and children, promising a colourful palette of confectionaries that celebrate the joy of the season. Available from 18 to 21 April 2025, introducing the first ever Easter themed Afternoon Tea Menu (HK$528), while the ever-popular Fortnum’s Children’s Afternoon Tea Menu (HK$288) returns to sprinkle springtime charm and enchant little ones again.

Hutong

For Easter offerings with an Asian and spicy slant, look to Hutong’s Easter Set Lunch Menu (HK$480 for three-courses/HK$500 for four-courses) available from April 18 to 21. Featuring fiery North Chinese favourites alongside festive desserts, the dining will be complemented by captivating live performances including face-changing shows and diabolo demonstrations.

On April 20, the restaurant will also have a 90 Minutes Feng Wei Brunch (K$588 per person), offering unlimited dim sum and featuring bite-size pastries of Strawberry Chocolate Tart with Easter Eggs, Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, and Coconut Cake Roll with Coconut Chutney.

Rén

April is all about Easter offerings. Social enterprise Rén, which supports underprivileged youths through the hospitality community, has teamed up with The Mira Hong Kong’s executive pastry chef Smita Grosse to create 600 chocolate eggs to support Rén’s charitable work. The chocolate eggs will be available for purchase at Rén’s upcoming launch event on April 17 at Coco Cafe Patisserie at The Mira Hong Kong, at Clarence on April 21, and any of their upcoming pop-ups.

Speaking of Clarene, Rén has also partnered with their chef Olivier Elzer to launch an Easter campaign at Clarence. The ticketed event will feature myriad of drinks and boxes of chocolate Easter eggs will be available for sale on the day. Check Rén’s Instagram @renhk__ for further details.

Lala

Michelin-starred Chef Franckelie Laloum and hospitality visionary Michael Larkin recently opened a brand new French fine dining spot in Soho. Named Lala as a nod to the first two letters of both their surnames, the menu is a love letter to the classics of French cuisine. One can expect dishes like Parsley Garlic Frog Legs; Duck, Poultry, Paté En Croute, Sweetbread, Langoustine, Vol Au Vent; Angus Beef Tenderloin Flambé, Kampot Pepper Sauce; and Charcoaled Grill Turbot, Hollandaise Sauce. Chef Laloum’s philosophy is simplicity - letting the quality of the ingredients shine while delivering consistent excellence on every plate.

We had a taste of the pastries here and loved it. The pastry program is helmed by Natalie Leung, a seasoned pastry chef with over a decade of experience spanning Hong Kong and Australia.
