David Ho recommends five picks to stream on Netflix this spooky season

Monster: The Ed Gein Story

The third season of the Monster anthology spotlights Ed Gein, the Butcher of Plainfield who supposedly fashioned keepsakes from the skin and bones of corpses. Gein (played by Charlie Hunnam) was the inspiration for a number of horror classics like Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs. The series explores his life and crimes through allusions to those films.

True Haunting

Helmed by Saw director James Wan, the five-episode Netflix series is based on real-life hauntings, as documented by the people who survived them. It covers two paranormal stories: a student plagued by a spirit, while the other concerns a dream Victorian home turned nightmare due to ghosts. Expect a mix of scripted re-enactments and real-life interviews.

Until Dawn

Based on a PlayStation game of the same name, Until Dawn is a horror survival film that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Unknown threats hunt a group of friends, who find themselves stuck in a time loop. A death will reset the night, so they’ll need to watch out… The only way to escape is to survive until dawn.

Day Shift

This action-comedy flick stars Jamie Foxx as Bud Jablonski, a vampire hunter living undercover as a pool cleaner. Set in Los Angeles, Jablonski is on the down and out and tries to rejoin a vampire hunting union to settle his financial woes. He is joined by Snoop Dogg as a veteran vampire hunter and Dave Franco as a vampire union supervisor.

28 Years Later

28 Years Later is the third film in the 28 post-apocalyptic horror film franchise. It centres on the outbreak of the Rage Virus, a contagious disease that induces homicidal rage in those infected. A sequel to 28 Years Later called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is coming out in January 2026. So best to bone up on this via Netflix before The Bone Temple comes out.
