After months of anticipation, “Marty Supreme” is finally making its way to Hong Kong cinemas on March 19. The A24 film first premiered last December and quickly generated buzz for its unusual premise, Josh Safdie’s distinctive filmmaking style and Timothée Chalamet’s widely praised performance. Now that it’s finally arriving in Hong Kong, here’s what to know about the sports comedy

It’s inspired by a real ping-pong legend

Marty Supreme takes loose inspiration from Marty Reisman, one of the most colorful figures in American table tennis history, and draws in part from his 1974 autobiography The Money Player: The Confessions of America’s Greatest Table Tennis Champion and Hustler. Born in 1930 to Russian Jewish immigrants and raised on New York’s Lower East Side, Reisman discovered table tennis as a child and quickly developed a natural gift for the game.

But Reisman was never just another champion. Nicknamed “The Needle” for his lightning-fast strokes and the “Bad Boy of Table Tennis,” he built a reputation as a gambler, hustler and showman as much as an athlete. Over the course of his career, he won 22 major titles, yet he was just as famous for hustling wealthy amateurs in high-stakes matches and performing playful table-tennis routines during Harlem Globetrotters games. In Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet plays Marty Mauser, a fictionalized version of the flamboyant New York legend.

It marks Josh Safdie’s first solo directorial film

Marty Supreme is directed by Josh Safdie, marking his first solo feature after years of working alongside his brother Benny Safdie. Together, the Safdie brothers became known for their intense, street-level New York films, including Good Time (2017) and the critically acclaimed Uncut Gems (2019), both praised for their nerve-racking pace and chaotic energy.

In recent years, the two filmmakers have begun exploring their own paths. Benny Safdie has moved further into acting – appearing in films such as Oppenheimer – while also developing projects of his own. With Marty Supreme, Josh Safdie steps out on his own but brings along the same restless, character-driven style that defined their earlier work.

It’s more than just a ping-pong movie

While table tennis sits at the center of the story, Marty Supreme isn’t really about the sport itself. At its core, the film is about ambition, obsession and the lengths someone might go to chase a dream. The story follows Marty, a struggling young man working at his uncle’s shoe store on New York’s Lower East Side, who becomes determined to compete in international table-tennis tournaments. But the path isn’t exactly noble. Marty lies, manipulates and pushes away the people closest to him in pursuit of success. Set in the 1950s, the film blends sports drama with dark comedy, using ping-pong as the stage for a portrait of a deeply flawed yet oddly magnetic protagonist.

The film features a star-studded cast

Beyond Timothée Chalamet in the lead role, Marty Supreme brings together a wide-ranging ensemble. Gwyneth Paltrow returns to the big screen for the first time in seven years since Avengers: Endgame (2019), while Fran Drescher, best known for her iconic role in the 1990s sitcom The Nanny, appears as Marty’s mother. Meanwhile, rapper and producer Tyler, the Creator, makes his feature film acting debut, adding another dimension to his already wide-ranging creative career. The cast also includes Odessa A’zion and businessman and Shark Tank personality Kevin O’Leary, alongside several cameo appearances that further round out the film’s ensemble.

It has been dominating the awards conversation

Since its premiere, Marty Supreme has quickly become one of the most talked-about films of the current awards season. Much of that attention has centered on Timothée Chalamet’s performance, which critics have widely praised as one of the boldest roles of his career. Chalamet has already won Best Actor at both the Golden Globe Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards, giving the film strong momentum heading into the 2026 Academy Awards in mid-March. With a total of nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor, Marty Supreme is shaping up to be one of the season’s major contenders.
