Bulgari’s skinny pursuit leads to another record-breaking timepiece, Gloria Fung writes
Watchmakers constantly strive to outdo each other with their latest and most incredible novelties. The ultra-thin category is one that many watchmakers compete in. Perhaps not only because it is such an impressive technical feat but also because it immediately brings forth an advantage for the owner. A slimmer case naturally lends to more comfortable wear. Skinny watches are often more ergonomically sound. It also helps that they are practically weightless when worn on the wrist.
Bulgari is among the watchmakers that are constantly striving to challenge the notion of thinness. The house has showcased this particular know-how in recent years through its Ccto collection.
Though it has a history deeply rooted in jewellery making, the house has brought forth extreme dedication when it comes to carving out a niche in watchmaking. It’s particularly become known for making ultra-thin, sleek watches in recent years with the Octo Finissimo collection.
The Octo Finissimo, made unique by its eight-sided bezel and case, are often in titanium and fitted with a matching link bracelet, which adds to the airiness of these ultra-thin designs. The design has been shattering records in its pursuit of thinness since 2014. The collection holds nine watchmaking records to date.
In yet another bid to take home the record for the thinnest mechanical movement, Bulgari presents an all-new Octo that seemingly defies the logic of watchmaking at this year.
This year’s Octo Finissimo Ultra is crowned the world’s thinnest mechanical watch, measuring just 1.70 mm. Bulgari has managed to shave down the set by the brand itself in 2022 by 0.1mm. The timepiece also takes home the title for the thinnest COSC-credited calibre.
The new Octo Finnish Ultra features the same monochromatic grey finish signature to the collection. The skeletonised dial displays the hours and minutes across separated sub-dials.
This sensational timepiece is limited to just 20 pieces and is among one of the highlights from the watchmaker this year.
