Serena Williams has had many moments on the courts. Trophies aside, Williams is also known to make powerful statements with her outfits and this time will be no different. For the upcoming 50th edition of the US Open in New York, Williams will be wearing Virgil Abloh as part of The Queen Collection collaboration with Nike.
Abloh might be busy with his new role as artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton but that was never going to stop him continuing to innovate with new collaborations that Off-White has become known for.
“With Serena, we have one of our generation’s most powerful, inspiring athletes as the muse,” said Abloh in Nike’s annoucement. “I was trying to embody her spirit and bring something compelling and fresh to tennis.”
“What I love about tennis is the gracefulness. It’s an aggressive and powerful game, but it takes touch and finesse,” said Abloh. “So the dress is feminine, but combines her aggression. It’s partially revealing. It’s asymmetrical. It has a sort of ballerina-esque silhouette to symbolize her grace. It’s not about bells and whistles and trick. It’s just about it living on the body, and expressing Serena’s spirit with each swing of the racket.”
Abloh has designed an elegant and sporty white daytime dress with supportive-mesh which will keep her cool and move with her as she plays as well as a bold nighttime version Inspired by William’s love of dance and bullet, both dresses feature an asymmetric design with a tulled flare skirt.
The Queen Collection also includes a special edition NikeCourt Flare 2 PE, a bomber jacket, bag and limited editions of The 10: Nike Air Max 97 and The 10: Nike Blazer Mid SW.
