With the highly anticipated new season of Emily in Paris upon us, Olivia Bullock looks at some of the key looks from Part One of Season Four and who Emily is wearing

As Emily in Paris enters its fourth season, it is no secret that Emily’s fashion sense and her audience share a love-hate relationship. The American’s take on Parisian chic has turned heads and not always in the right way. Her Season One ‘ringarde’ looks undoubtedly received the most criticism, comparing her fashion to a knock-off version of the ensembles worn by Blaire and Serena of Gossip Girl on a trip to Paris as she paired stereotypical berets with school girl-like outfits.

However, the style team have since upped the ante and claim that the star’s clumsy outfit choices were simply a show of Emily finding her feet in Paris. Patricia Field, costume designer of Season One and Two, expressed “she wasn’t French all the way, even though she has influences, so, I felt that she was the young optimist, and came from Chicago, and wore colours, and she stood alone in that philosophy of wardrobe.”

If Part One of Season Four is anything to go by, viewers have much to look forward to when it comes to the wardrobe. A Netflix source revealed there had been a staggering 2,500 pairs of shoes featured (150 of those being iconic Christian Louboutins), 3,000 pieces of jewellery and 350 designer bags. Although demure appears to be the buzzword of the season, we can be certain Emily’s looks are most definitely not.

The character’s natural inclination towards an explosion of colour is no secret. Besides a handful of black and white moments for large events, the star frequently fashions bold shades. She takes the role of PR girl in her stride with extravagant hats, ruffled mini dresses and jaw dropping gowns (whether that jaw dropping is good or bad is open to interpretation).

The looks are most definitely daring, combining patterns, colours and sky high heels. One of her most outlandish looks of the most recent episodes featured a custom black and white striped catsuit with a wide hat and cape-like overskirt trailing the floor.

Sex and The City stylist Patricia Field took the helm for the Emily in Paris costume designs for Season One and Two, before designer Marilyn Fitoussi succeeded her. “I want to see fashion and accessories that make me dream, that are unaffordable, inaccessible. Yes, it’s true Emily can’t afford all the clothes on offer in the show, of course. No, her apartment can’t hold all the clothes. And that’s entertainment, baby!” declared Fitoussi.

A favourite look for #legend has to be a teaser for the second part of Season Four which revealed a fashion homage to Hepburn’s 1963 film Charade, with a brown fur hat, a balaclava, and a matching coat.

In another look, Emily was ready to brave the cold with a Isabel Marant Étoile faux shearling coat with toggle fastenings and over-the-knee brown leather Christian Louboutin boots.

Drawing on an American-psycho inspired look, she also embraced a boss girl look in a cobalt blue pantsuit.

The nod to French brands throughout the series’ is not shy with a plethora of show stopping looks featuring Balmain, Coperni, Garmanier, Jacquemus, Schiaparelli and Valliant. The show has also dabbled in more subtle labels like the Korean label Pushbutton and Vietmanese designer Do Manh Cuong’s Sixdo.

Boucheron invited the cast and crew to its flagship address at 26 Place Vendôme for episode two of Season Four. Actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu can be seen in the Quatre collection for its 20th anniversary. A total of one-hundred of Boucheron’s exquisite pieces were used for filming.
