The red carpet highlights at the 79th edition BAFTA Awards

Another year, another award ceremony. With yesterday’s conclusion of the annual British Academy Film Awards, it wasn’t only a chance for the most accomplished of the film industry to receive their flowers but also an opportunity to set this season’s defining trends.

Nevertheless, acting talent doesn’t necessarily translate to aesthetic taste. As with every celebrity event, outfits ranged from spectacular showstoppers to certified disaster. Here’s our choices of the boldest and most boring fashion statements of the night.

Bold: Teyana Taylor

Nominated for her performance in One Battle After Another, the New York-born actress never fails to stun in her public appearances. Wearing a custom Burberry dress, a high-flared collar draped the neck for a rose-like silhouette. Silk ruffles in a deep, rich velvet-like brown created a classy, contour-elevating look.

Boring: Leonardo DiCaprio

Though featured in the same film as Taylor, it seems he doesn’t share the same enthusiasm for style as his co-star. A black tuxedo with a red watch makes for a repetitive dullness that dims his illustrious career.

Bold: Alan Cumming

As the host, Cumming didn’t shy away from the spotlight. Dressed in a tasseled coat of black, green and white gradient, the Scottish veteran actor combined a custom sunburst-shaped brooch with a multi-colored hair accessory for a unique flamboyance.

Boring: Kate Hudson

A deep scarlet gown from Prada, the dress’s plunging neckline and off-the-shoulder cut wasn’t enough to save it from its overwhelming lack of detail. Not to mention that the boxy cut and asymmetrical seam appeared relatively unflattering, Hudson’s look was neither pleasing to look at nor particularly noticeable.

Bold: Audrey Nuna

Once again paying tribute to her family’s long history with Thom Browne, the K-Pop Demon Hunters singer wore an outfit distinguished by the American designer’s signature codes: red, white and blue palettes, dog motifs, precise tailoring and understated elegance.

Boring: Carey Mulligan

Another Prada piece, deep blue silk would’ve looked good anywhere except for the red carpet. With small straps on the back and neckline, from the front it resembles an odd mix between an apron dress and A-line – an unfortunately unexciting and unimaginative gown for the British actress.

Bold: Paddington

A truly brave statement, the bear arrived with a noticeable lack of pants, letting his exposed furs express a natural, mellowed-out brown. Combined with his signature blue trench coat and red hat, his look blended a stylish politeness with effortless adorableness.
