Bottega Veneta and Cassina have joined forces as part of Milan Design Week through the special project, On the Rocks

Apr 19, 2024

In the current landscape of the design industry, events showcasing artistic works like Milan Design Week are considered significant and receive considerable attention, particularly from enthusiasts of design and creativity. When discussing sophisticated and innovative design concepts, Bottega Veneta, a luxury Italian brand we are familiar with, is often among the top names. They consistently impress with their creations, whether in fashion, jewellery, or various branches of exhibitions

In Milan Design Week this year, Bottega Veneta has collaborated with the legendary furniture brand Cassina and Fondation Le Corbusier to be part of the grand design festival through a special project named “On the Rocks.” This large-scale installation art is inspired by the iconic LC14 Tabouret Cabanon design by Le Corbusier, located at Palazzo San Fedele in Milan. The name of the project is meticulously chosen to reflect the origins of the Tabouret and evoke memories of the Cabanon, a project crafted by the world-renowned architect Le Corbusier. Specifically, the iconic cigar box that served as the original inspiration for the project is also showcased in the exhibition.

What’s even more intriguing is that the On the Rocks installation is a project that has chosen to reinterpret various models of the LC14 Tabouret, refining their details through a fusion with designs from the Bottega Veneta Winter 24 collection. Additionally, it incorporates limited edition designs crafted under the sharp eye of Matthieu Blazy, the brand’s Creative Director, who oversees the creative direction of the brand.

The unique leather weaving technique, known as Intreccio foulard, which is a hallmark of the brand, has been intricately integrated into various models showcased in this exhibition. These pieces have been adorned with a palette of charming shades, including red, yellow, blue, or rain-tree green. Each of these has been meticulously crafted by skilled artisans from the city of Montebello through special brush strokes before being coated with black paint to create a distinctive finish that conveys the allure of imperfection in the final stages.

The models crafted from wood have been elevated to a remarkable level of sophistication, as they have been intricately integrated using a special burning technique based on traditional methods from Japan. This technique not only serves to protect the wood naturally but also reveals distinctive patterns that would be difficult to achieve with other finishing techniques. Additionally, the products showcased in the On the Rocks project will be available in limited quantities of 60 for the leather-crafted models and 100 pieces for the wood-crafted ones.

Indeed, the prestigious exhibition campaign has been stunningly captured by the talented Pierre Debusschere. Furthermore, the renowned model Anok Yai, celebrated for her captivating beauty, has joined in promoting this extraordinary project.

Art enthusiasts who are interested in the avant-garde design exhibition “On the Rocks” can attend and experience the masterpieces firsthand from April 6th to April 20th at Palazzo San Fedele in Milan, Italy.
