The carpet designs that authentically convey the real essence and identity of Issey Miyake in every detail

Although the legendary founder of this esteemed Japanese brand has passed away, Satoshi Kondo, the current Creative Director of the house, continues to convey the profound charm of Issey Miyake without any compromise. This commitment is evident in their latest project, a collaboration with the highly creative brand from the Netherlands, We Make Carpets. Together, they have crafted an art piece in the form of “carpets,” which is part of the exhibition at Milan Design Week 2024.

When considering the term “carpet,” many might envision expansive woven textiles known for their softness. Yet, carpets, as seen through the eyes of Issey Miyake and We Make Carpets are quite different. In this installation, the Skewer Carpet 2 stands out as it’s meticulously crafted from over 60,000 slender bamboo skewers, offering a unique interpretation of this traditional form.

With meticulous craftsmanship by Daan Simons, an artist specializing in woodwork and joinery inspired by Japanese techniques, each bamboo skewer is delicately dyed at its tip with shades of purple, red, and orange-yellow. They are then carefully arranged on large grey-black foam sheets to form intricate patterns. This artwork evokes the structure of wood from a Tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), bringing it to life in a profound and meaningful manner.

The Skewer Carpet 2 installation is now open to the public at Milan Design Week 2024 and will remain so until April 29, 2024.
