Mercedes-Benz pushes the boundaries of off-road capabilities with the new, fully electric G580e
For over four decades, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has reigned supreme as the ultimate luxury off-road vehicle. Now this automotive icon is entering a new era with the introduction of the G580e – the first fully electric G-Class. Newly launched alongside two other G-Class variants – the G 500 and Mercedes-AMG G 63 – the G580e represents a bold step into the future while staying true to its rugged roots.
At first glance, the G580e retains the unmistakable angular shape that has made the G-Class instantly recognisable since 1979. But look closer, and you’ll notice a slightly raised hood, new A-pillar trim, a spoiler lip on the roof strip and flared rear wheel arches featuring “air curtains” that contribute to optimised aerodynamics and interior aeroacoustics. The 116-kWh high-voltage lithium- ion battery, with up to 491km all-electric range (WLTP), is integrated into the ladder frame and housed in a torsion- resistant casing to protect it from water and dirt.
Along with the G 500 and Mercedes-AMG G 63, the G580e is designed to excel under all conditions with improved performance thanks to its electrified drive system, modern driver assistance system, increased comfort and advanced digitalisation. Its superior off-road capabilities include 100% gradeability on suitable surfaces, a ground clearance between the axles of 250 mm, a maximum fording depth of 85 cm for water and mud, and approach and departure angles of 32° at the front and 30.7° at the rear.
The G580e’s four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels develop a combined output of 587 hp, which together with the selectable Low Range off- road gear reduction enable unique driving characteristics and exclusive functions.
With the G-Turn, drivers can turn the G580e almost on the spot. The vehicle performs up to two complete vehicle turns in the desired direction on unpaved or loose surfaces. This not only looks spectacular but can also be helpful when driving off-road. The G-Steering function can deliver a significantly smaller turning circle when driving off-road, while the intelligent off-road crawl function supports off- road driving by maintaining optimum propulsion, allowing the driver to focus on navigating difficult terrain. (G-Turn and G-Steering are only for use on loose or soft surfaces, and are not permissible for use on public roads.)
Inside the G580e is where off-road character meets top-class equipment. The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system takes centre stage, featuring a 31.2 cm touchscreen display. The new Offroad Cockpit provides an overview of the most important data and functions for off-road operation, while the “transparent bonnet” function enables a virtual view under the front of the vehicle to enable the driver to react quickly to obstacles or assess crests, embankments and depressions if they are no longer visible through the windscreen. A Burmester® 3D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos®, G-Roar sound experience with G-Class-specific driving among other sounds, 64-colour ambient lighting and comprehensive leather upholstery complete the luxurious experience.
With the G580e, Mercedes-Benz is writing a new chapter in the storied history of the G-Class. Embodying the brand ethos of “Adventurous Luxury”, where challenges are embraced and overcome with resilience, this unique fusion of tradition with progressive technology is ready to tackle any and every terrain.
