When Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso meets webcomic artist Olivecoat, it becomes a dialogue between time, storytelling, and craftsmanship
In an era where everything is condensed into instant information, Jaeger-LeCoultre chooses to speak in a different rhythm. Since its inception, the brand’s Made of Makers programme has sought to bring traditional craftsmanship into broader artistic disciplines, from architecture and music to perfumery and light painting.
This time, Jaeger-LeCoultre collaborates with Olivecoat, a webcomic artist from the Philippines. She interprets the origin story of the Reverso through the medium of comics, often referred to as the ninth art.
Born in Cebu, Olivecoat is a self-taught artist known for her gentle palettes, delicate character interactions, and subtle humour. Her works explore emotional connections between people, conveyed through a tender visual language. She often says her greatest motivation comes from her readers and from those comments that say, “this made me feel understood.” Perhaps that is why, when she reimagines the story of the Reverso from an Eastern perspective, this nearly century-old #legend finds a renewed sense of life.
The Reverso was born in 1931, inspired by a single moment on an Indian polo field. Specifically, the need to protect the watch face during play. Olivecoat’s comic transforms this iconic scene into a vertical visual narrative, using scrolling panels to evoke the flow of time. By juxtaposing the quiet of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Le Sentier workshop with the tension of an Indian polo match, she lets history and imagination unfold side by side. Through her visual storytelling, Olivecoat reshapes a Western watchmaking legend with the subtle emotion and poetic restraint characteristic of Eastern narratives.
