Panther Chan is making waves with her unique blend of pop-rock and socially conscious lyrics after her resurgence in the Hong Kong music scene. As she recounts her journey and recent experiences with Hill Choi Lee, it becomes clear that her artistry is deeply intertwined with her evolution and the cultural landscape of Hong Kong
In March, the 33-year-old singer-songwriter Panther Chan performed at the iconic Hong Kong Coliseum. An experience she describes as both precious and grounding. "I’m enjoying every night’s moment," she shares. This performance was not just a showcase of her talent but a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. The stage, with its vibrant lighting and effects, provided a perfect backdrop for her music, allowing her to connect with the audience on a profound level. "It’s a valuable experience for me," she notes, emphasising the importance of each performance in her growth as an artist.

"When I look back on the footage of my performances and find that the messages in my songs are properly conveyed - not only through lyrics - but also via stage lights and effects, and video montages, these moments of realisation are very precious to me."
When discussing the contrast between intimate gigs and large stadium concerts, Chan expresses a preference for the latter, citing the energy and freedom they afford her. "In a music festival, I can unleash all my energy to the fullest," she explains. This preference highlights her desire to create an impactful experience. One where she can fully immerse herself in her music and engage with her audience. Curiously, the genre that is embedded in the singer's soul happens to be pop-rock. A not-so-mainstream choice of an artist her age.

Chan's lifelong affinity for pop-rock is rooted in its emotional resonance. "Rock music is especially powerful to me," she states, reflecting on how it allows her to express a wide range of emotions, from joy to anger. This genre, she believes, resonates with her audience, providing a sense of liberation and connection. She finds inspiration in the highs and lows of life, influenced by her father’s life experiences, which she channels into her songwriting.

Chan’s creativity extends beyond music. She draws inspiration from various media, including books and anime. She has been captivated by the works of Hayao Miyazaki, whose animated films resonate with her on multiple levels. "The musical scores in his work are so powerful," she remarks, contemplating the impact of soundtracks in storytelling. This cross-pollination of ideas enriches her songwriting, allowing her to explore themes of emotion and humanity.
The freedom to create music on her own terms has been transformative for Chan. "I don’t force myself to create," she asserts. Chan further emphasises the importance of a positive mindset in her creative process. This newfound liberty has allowed her to explore her artistic boundaries without the pressure of commercial expectations. "The interest in creativity is on the rise," she exclaims, indicating her excitement for what lies ahead.

Despite her success, Chan acknowledges the challenges that come with a long music career. Performing at award ceremonies and large events can be daunting, particularly when competing with other acts. "I’m very sensitive to the sounds that I hear," she admits, revealing the pressure she feels in such environments. Yet, she remains committed to honing her craft, seeking to absorb experiences that will enhance her performances.
Outside of music, Chan finds solace in knitting and video games, activities that allow her to unwind. "I usually find it hard to make music," she shares. The singer highlights the necessity of carving out time for her passions amidst a busy schedule. This balance is crucial for her well-being and creativity.

Recently, Chan has collaborated with luxury fashion brands that inevitably influenced her personal style. "Each item has a story to tell," she reflects, noting how these experiences have enriched her understanding of design and aesthetics. This evolution in her style mirrors her growth as an artist, blending her musical identity with a broader cultural narrative.
As she looks to the future, Chan is eager to continue creating music that resonates with her audience and reflects her experiences. With upcoming projects in the pipeline, she remains committed to exploring new themes and pushing creative boundaries. "I’m also working hard to create more," she concludes, a testament to her unwavering dedication to her craft.
