The art world is always on the lookout for fresh talent. In Hong Kong, a collaboration between MGM and Art Basel is set to highlight the work of emerging artists from around the globe. The inaugural "MGM Discoveries Art Prize" will be announced at Art Basel Hong Kong on 28 March 2025.

This prize is designed to support artists of all ages and nationalities. It aims to elevate their influence in the international art scene and bring new energy to the global art community. The prize is part of a broader effort to promote artistic exchanges within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and beyond.

The jury for the prize includes five experts from the international arts and cultural sphere. They are Aaron Cezar, founding director of Delfina Foundation; Antonia Carver, director of Art Jameel; Christopher K Ho, executive director of Asia Art Archive; X Zhu-Nowell, executive director and chief curator of Rockbund Art Museum; and Sam Seungho Park, chairperson of the ParkSeoBo Foundation.

These experts have shortlisted three artists: Shin Min from Seoul, Kayode Ojo from Berlin, and Saju Kunhan from Mumbai. The winner will receive a cash prize of US$50,000, shared with their gallery. They will also have the opportunity to hold an exhibition and engage in artistic exchanges in Macau.

This initiative is not just about recognising talent; it is also about creating opportunities for artists to grow. By inviting award-winning artists to Macau, MGM hopes to inspire younger generations to engage in artistic creation. The prize reflects a broader commitment to advancing global arts and culture.

Art Basel, with its premier art shows in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Paris, is well-positioned to support this effort. Each of its shows is unique, reflecting the host city and region. This collaboration with MGM highlights the importance of nurturing emerging talent in the art world.

As the art world continues to evolve, initiatives like the MGM Discoveries Art Prize play a crucial role in shaping its future. They provide a platform for new voices to be heard and for innovative art to be celebrated. Whether you are an artist, a collector, or simply someone who appreciates art, this prize is worth watching.
