Two years since Lady Bird swept the world, Greta Gerwig is back to direct what looks to be another massive project (and guaranteed Oscar fodder): her adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women. The trailer, which was released on August 13, teases an all-star cast of some of the industry’s top talent, including Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Timothée Chalamet, Laura Dern and Meryl Streep. Lady Bird co-stars Ronan and Chalamet are reunited on the big screen as Jo and Laurie, and in a much different time and place than a Sacramento Catholic high school.

True to the setting of the book, the film was shot in the part of Massachusetts where Alcott grew up and will feature visuals inspired by era-specific New England painters such as Winslow Homer. Knowing Gerwig, this adaptation will also likely have the most pronounced and direct presentation of the novel’s feminist themes when compared to past adaptations. Outside of generating major buzz among critics and fans alike, Little Women seems to be a confident shoo-in for Oscar nominations and Academy attention. You’d expect nothing less from a collaboration between Hollywood’s hottest young director with some of the most talented actors of their generation in recreating an all-time literary classic.

Little Women‘s theatrical release is set for December 25, 2019 in the US by Sony Pictures. Watch the trailer here:
