In true Chanel fashion, Karl Lagerfeld hosted his latest Métiers D’art show in a huge, extraordinary way. Another destination show, Lagerfeld welcomed everyone (for the first time ever) to his hometown of Hamburg, Germany. Housed in the illustrious and brand new Elbphilharmonie concert hall conceived by the architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the show was majestic and grand, with a wealth of history juxtaposed against modern architecture – playing the perfect setting for Lagerfeld’s Paris-Hamburg collection. Inspired by the past (more specifically, the ’60s), present and future, the range features pieces reminiscent of Hamburg’s merchant navy crew, with a Chanel touch of course. The result was a mix of mod, sailor themes, and well, Chanel’s penchant for chicness.
Standout pieces included extra-wide leg and drop-front trousers, sailor-collared jackets and a range of eye-catching accessories such as fingerless gloves, and knitted socks. Lagerfeld also reimagined the classic Chanel jacket, giving it a flared cut and making it into a peacoat. All these silhouettes speak to a masculine inspiration but a feminine outlook, with the house of Chanel playing with the gender binary more than ever. However, Lagerfeld made a big statement in bringing back the black tights and mini skirt look – so get your Gossip Girl outfits back out for next year. Those caps too – they’re not newsboy caps, they’re actually sailor hats, another nod to Hamburg’s navy port history.
Of course, a Chanel show is not complete without a slew of celebrities and celebrity models. Walking the runway were the likes of Kaia Gerber, Soo Joo Park and Anna Ewers. In attendance were big names including Kristen Stewart, Lily-Rose Depp and Tilda Swinton.
