Sep 25, 2024

The renowned fashion house unveils 'The Subtleties of a Dialogue', an exhibition that bridges the artistry of Cristóbal Balenciaga and contemporary designs by Demna, showcasing the intricate details that define its legacy

In a remarkable homage to the 2024 European Heritage Days, Balenciaga has unveiled an exhibition titled Les Subtilités d'un Dialogue (The Subtleties of a Dialogue) at Kering's historic headquarters in Paris.

This event, taking place on September 21 and 22, marks the ninth consecutive year that Kering has participated in this prestigious celebration of cultural heritage.

The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the artistic dialogue between Cristóbal Balenciaga, the founder revered for his pioneering contributions to fashion, and Demna, the current creative force behind the brand. Visitors will be immersed in a carefully curated display highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship and innovative designs synonymous with the House.

Divided into six thematic sections - The Collar, The Sleeve, The Waist, The Colour Black, and Dialogues between M. Balenciaga and Demna - the exhibition invites guests to delve into the micro aspects of fashion design.

Each section is designed to illuminate the intricate details that contribute to the macro narrative of Balenciaga’s enduring influence on global fashion.

Among the highlights are exquisite pieces crafted from materials such as Spanish lace, gazar (the first use of this fabric in history), silk satin, sustainably produced neoprene, and plush velvet. These selections exemplify technical prowess and a masterclass in materiality and form.

The exhibition is further enriched by a collaboration with the Pinault Collection, which features an array of contemporary artworks in the adjacent chapel under the title In Praise of Space. This interplay between historical garments and modern art enhances the dialogue surrounding creativity and heritage.

Balenciaga's extensive archive serves as the foundation for this exhibition, showcasing works that span from Cristóbal's early masterpieces to Demna's avant-garde ready-to-wear collections. This retrospective is not merely a celebration of aesthetic beauty; it is an invitation to engage with the profound societal meanings embedded within each garment.

As attendees navigate through this immersive experience, they are encouraged to appreciate the artistry and the cultural significance that Balenciaga has imparted to fashion throughout its storied history.
