Where to get your fix of fashion’s most cutting-edge designers

Style is a spectrum. It can be the basics: light layering, accessible colors and comfortable silhouettes. On the other side, there’s the asymmetrical cuts, raw edges and deconstructed patterns of the creative world’s most experimental minds.

For followers of this state-of-the-art camp, or even those who are just looking for something new, Hong Kong’s stores might seem bare of such items. But not to worry, a little digging reveals hidden gems in the city’s streets. Below, we pick out three spots with the best selections of adventure, innovation and excitement.

INK

Tucked away on the second floor of a small Causeway Bay fashion walk building, the shop’s littering of independent brands is unmatched. Constantly changing their interior, each visit is a masterclass in aesthetic curation. Decorations cycle through the most coveted archival pieces to seemingly unwearable structures: past exhibitions range from a pair of Marlboro cigarette-heeled pumps from Enfants Riches Déprimés to a skulled parachute bag from Aitor Throup.

With their men’s section in a monochromatic brutalist concrete, metal racks feature labels like Boris Bidjan Saberi, Leon Emanuel Blanck and Rick Owens. In contrast, their women’s section is a mellowed-out environment with hardwood floors and greenery. The darker, edgier palettes of Ann Demeulemeester, Carol Christian Poell and Uma Wang are balanced out with the brighter complexions of designers like Shushu/Tong, Decarnin’s Faith Connexion and Elena Dawson.

With friendly staff, and a considerably less amiable cat in residence, INK makes for a cozy, memorable shopping experience.

D-Mop

Leaning towards the streetwear side, searching through the concept store’s varied merchandising never gets boring. Located just a few minutes away from the MTR station, stocks include the staples of Coperni and Louis Gabriel Nouchi and the scene’s fastest-rising names of Heliot Emil and Lu’u Dan.

Blended in with casual offerings of adidas, Y-3 and Heron Preston, D-Mop has something for every occasion: athletic wear, formal dress and crocs alike. Intentionally crafted for a mix of wearability and visual flare, it’s the perfect place to renew your wardrobe for the latest season.

One of few Hong Kong-born department stores, the now global chain is a champion for both up-and-coming faces and avant-garde classics. With boutiques in almost every major shopping hub, certain locations feature glass displays of the wildest garments from renowned innovators like Comme des Garçons, Undercover and Kiko Kostadinov.

Adding in the typical luxury houses of Valentino, Versace and Celine, fitting rooms let you mix and match all kinds of styles – distinctly modern options with something for everyone.
