Gucci's 2018 freaky show broke the internet

As we get ready to say goodbye to 2018, we looked back at what went down throughout the past 12 months in the fashion world. Unsurprisingly, this year has proven to us that there’s never a dull moment in this industry. While some wowed us in the best possible ways, some others made us shake our heads and say “you’re drunk 2018, go home.”

From the most controversial to the cutest and the straight-up confusing, we rounded up 12 of the most shocking fashion moments of 2018 – and we invite you to relive them all with us.

Kanye West’s oversized slippers

Go big or go home, am I right, or am I right, Kanye? In response to the internet clowning him for wearing slippers that appeared to be a tad too small at 2 Chainz’s wedding, Kanye took on Twitter and posted photos of himself wearing a pair of very oversized slippers. I mean, we all know that he tends to do things on the extreme – have I mentioned the ridiculously oversized boxy outfits Kanye wore with Lil Pump in the music video for his latest single “I Love It “?

Gucci’s freaky AW18 fashion show

Gucci’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele had a Doctor Frankenstein’s moment when he turned into a mad scientist for the brand’s AW18 runway show. With the set looking like an operating room, the show made everyone lose their heads (literally) as the looks were styled with freaky elements such as severed heads, third eyes and baby dragons. It really isn’t photoshopped though!

Lil Miquela makes her Red carpet debut

CGI influencer and model Lil Miquela (@lilmiquela) walked the 2018 Fashion Awards’ red carpet wearing a coord by Richard Quinn, who won the British Emerging Talent Womenswear Award. Still not quite sure how that happened, but I’m sure they have their ways…

Meghan Markle as the Royal Bride

One of the main highlights of the year was undeniably the Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Meghan Markle looked more stunning than ever in her Givenchy wedding gown custom designed by Clare Waight Keller. Prince Harry, what a lucky champ you are!

Celine’s rebranding

Hedi Slimane’s debut at Celine divided the internet and the fashion community at large, especially with the introduction of the new logo, in which the accent on the ‘E’ was removed. While some praised Silmane, many were also disappointed. An account named @oldceline surfaced on Instagram the following day, causing strong feelings of nostalgia for the fans of Phoebe Philo’s iconic work for the fashion house.

Rihanna celebrates womanhood at first Savage x Fenty Show

Bad Gal Riri broke the internet once again with her first ever Savage x Fenty New York Fashion Week show. Featuring women of all sizes, races and ethnicities, it truly was a celebration of womanhood. We can’t forget the highlight of the show: a very pregnant Slick Woods walking the runway just before reportedly going into labor.

The Ferrangnez

Yes, another wedding because why not? The OG internet sweetheart, Chiara Ferragni tied the knot with Italian rapper Fedez in a lacy custom Dior gown designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri. I don’t know about your, but my Instagram feed was filled with all their super cute and definitely extra wedding moments for at least a whole week when it all happened. Talk about couple goals!

Ezra Miller’s red carpet looks

How dark are you today?

Ezra Miller is the most unexpected style icon of 2018. Despite his beautifully chiseled jawline that looks like it has been carved out of exquisite marble, he has been one of the most interestingly dressed person this year on red carpets. Thanks to the Fantastic Beasts star, we have all been officially blessed with the most theatrical and mystical looks.

GCDS’ Triple Breast Threat

Apparently GCDS thought that two breasts weren’t enough, so they made their models wear one fake prosthetic breast between their actual breasts while they walked the brand’s SS19 runway show. They’re really out here in 3018 while we’re all still stuck in 2018.

The Dolce & Gabbana Mess

#DGlovesChina ? More like #DGdesperateforthatChineseRMB lol. In a bid to further appeal to luxury’s covetable Chinese consumers, @dolcegabbana released some hella offensive “instructional” videos on the usage of chopsticks. Pandering at it’s finest, but taken up a notch by painting their target demographic as a tired and false stereotype of a people lacking refinement/culture to understand how to eat foreign foods and an over-the-top embellishment of cliché ambient music, comical pronunciations of foreign names/words, and Chinese subtitles (English added by us), which begs the question—who is this video actually for? It attempts to target China, but instead mocks them with a parodied vision of what modern China is not…a gag for amusement. Dolce & Gabbana have already removed the videos from their Chinese social media channels, but not Instagram. Stefano Gabbana has been on a much-needed social media cleanse (up until November 2nd), so maybe he kept himself busy by meddling with the marketing department for this series. Who wants to bet the XL cannoli “size” innuendos were his idea? Lmao. • #dolceandgabbana #altamoda #rtw #dgmillennials #stefanogabbana #shanghai #chinese #italian #cannoli #meme #wtf #dumb #lame #chopsticks #foodie #tutorial #cuisine #italianfood #asianmodel #asian #chinesefood #dietprada

Dolce & Gabbana is no stranger to controversies. Prior to their fashion show in Shanghai, the luxury label shared videos to promote the event in which an Asian model attempted to eat Italian food with chopsticks. The brand was immediately accused of racism and sparked anger online. To make things even worse, it appeared that Stefano Gabbana had responded to furious commenters online with even more offensive insults, posted by Instagram account @dietprada. The event got cancelled soon after the backlash.

Basically every Chanel runway set

Karl Lagerfeld has done it again, again and again. This year’s extravagant backdrops included a giant cruise ship, a beach, a forest, and a fake Parisian street. Talk about over-the-top creativity, Karl really has got it all.

A$AP Rocky’s Babushka Boi moment

Last but not least, Hollywood’s very own fashion killa, A$AP Rocky, rocked up (see what I did there?) at the LACMA Art and Film Gala looking like the coolest grandma we’ve ever seen. No doubt Pretty Flacko’s head-to-toe Gucci outfit was fire as usual, but the floral silk scarf that was wrapped around his head was the clear star of the show. I mean, if you don’t consider this as one of the most shocking moments in 2018 fashion, that’s totally cool, just don’t @ us.
