ณ เวลา 10.00 น. โดยประมาณของวันที่ 19 มีนาคม สถานที่นัดหมายไม่ใช่ที่ไหนอื่นไกล หากแต่เป็นคาเฟ่ Plantiful ที่ตั้งอยู่ ณ ชั้น GF ของศูนย์การค้าเกษร อัมรินทร์ William Lim ปรากฏกายด้วยชุดสูทสไตล์ modern twist โทนสีเทา ทาง #Legend_th ได้ทักทายกันอยู่สักพักก่อนที่จะเคลื่อนย้ายไปยังห้องรับรองชั้นบนของ Amarin Tower ด้วยความช่วยเหลือของคุณภานุวัฒน์ พันธุ์พัฒนาศิลป์ (ทรัส) เพื่อให้การพูดคุยกันในครั้งนี้พิเศษและเป็นส่วนตัวอย่างสูงสุด<\/p>\n

แม้จะไม่ได้เป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวางในประเทศไทย แต่ในมุมมองระดับสากลนั้น William Lim ถือเป็นหนึ่งในสถาปนิกระดับพระกาฬจากฮ่องกง ผู้คร่ำหวอดในวงการสถาปัตย์มากว่า 30 ปี และดำรงตำแหน่ง Managing Director ของ CL3 สตูดิโอสถาปัตย์อันเลื่องชื่อจากฮ่องกง ที่การันตีฝีมือผ่านหลากหลายโปรเจคทั่วโลก “เด็กหลายคนอาจชอบวิทยาศาสตร์ หลายคนอาจสนใจในเรื่องราวของตัวเลข แต่ผมเป็นเด็กประเภทที่มีความสนใจในศิลปะมาตั้งแต่เยาว์วัย” William Lim บอกเราถึงความชอบในวัยเด็กของเขา เมื่อถูกถามถึงที่มาของความชอบในงานสายสถาปัตย์และการออกแบบ “จริงๆ แล้วไม่ใช่ว่าผมไม่สนใจในวิทยาศาสตร์นะครับ และตัวผมเองก็ทำได้ดีเช่นกันในวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ แต่ศิลปะคือสาขาวิชาที่ดูมีเสน่ห์และน่าสนใจมากที่สุดในสายตาของผมเท่านั้นเอง อาจเพราะมันอนุญาตให้ผมได้ปลดปล่อยความคิดสร้างสรรค์และความคิดของตนเองได้อย่างตรงไปตรงมามากที่สุด และด้วยเหตุนี้ ผมจึงตัดสินใจศึกษาต่อในด้านสถาปัตยกรรม เนื่องด้วยว่ามันเป็นศาสตร์ที่หลอมรวมเรื่องราวของศิลปะ ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ คณิตศาสตร์ และหลักการคิดบนพื้นฐานของเหตุและผลเข้าด้วยกัน” ชายวัยกลางคนในชุดสูทสีเทาได้กล่าวต่อกับเรา<\/p>\n

ด้วยความมั่นใจในเส้นทางการเป็นสถาปนิก ทำให้ William Lim ตัดสินใจเดินทางไปศึกษาต่อด้านสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ที่มหาวิทยาลัย Cornell University ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา พร้อมทั้งทำงานในฐานะของสถาปนิกที่เมืองบอสตัน (Boston) เป็นเวลากว่า 5 ปี ก่อนที่จะกลับมาก่อตั้ง CL3 ในปี 1992 “ในตอนที่ผมศึกษาและทำงานอยู่ที่สหรัฐอเมริกา ทุกอย่างเป็นเรื่องของสถาปัตยกรรมฝั่งตะวันตก ณ ขณะนั้นการออกแบบอาคารได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากการขยายตัวของเมือง และทฤษฏีเรื่อง City within a City ของ Le Corbusier พื้นที่อาคารและตึกมากมายถูกแต่งเติมฟังก์ชั่นต่าง ๆ ลงไปให้มีประโยชน์ใช้สอยที่สอดคล้องกับเรื่องของไลฟ์สไตล์มากขึ้น ทำให้การสร้างอาคารสำนักงานหรือออฟฟิศอย่างเฉพาะเจาะจงเพียงอย่างเดียวไม่ได้รับความนิยมอีกต่อไป แต่ในทางกลับกัน หลังจากที่กลับมาทำงานในฝั่งเอเชียในเวลาต่อมา ผมคิดว่าการออกแบบสถาปัตย์ในปัจจุบันมีความเกี่ยวเนื่องกับคอนเซปต์ของ “Urban Regeneration” มากขึ้นอย่างไม่เคยเห็นมาก่อน หรืออีกนัยหนึ่งคือเป็นแนวคิดการออกแบบที่สามารถพัฒนาคุณภาพของพื้นที่ชุมชนรอบข้าง สิ่งแวดล้อม ความยั่งยืน และทำให้ความเป็นอยู่ของผู้อยู่อาศัยดียิ่งขึ้นได้ในเวลาเดียวกัน มันคือขั้นกว่าของคอนเซปต์ City within a city” William Lim กล่าวกับเราถึงความเปลี่ยนแปลงในแวดวงสถาปัตย์จากมุมมองของเขาตลอดช่วงเวลาที่ผ่านมา<\/p>\n

ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น อย่างที่ได้กล่าวไว้ข้างต้นแล้วว่าศูนย์การค้าเกษร อัมรินทร์ คือโปรเจคชิ้นเรือธงล่าสุดที่ถูกรังสรรค์ขึ้นใหม่จากการดูแลของ CL3 ที่กินเวลาการรีโนเวทยาวนานกว่า 6 ปี ทำให้เป็นการยากที่เราจะไม่สอบถามเชิงลึกกับเขาถึงที่มาและแรงบันดาลใจของโปรเจคยักษ์ใหญ่ในครั้งนี้ “คอนเซปต์หลักของโปรเจคเกษร อัมรินทร์ ในครั้งนี้คือเราต้องการที่จะนำเสนอสถานที่ที่สามารถมอบให้ได้ซึ่งประสบการณ์ที่หลากหลาย และแน่นอนว่า เกษร อัมรินทร์ คือจิกซอว์ตัวสุดท้ายของโปรเจค ‘Gaysorn’ ทั้ง 3 แห่ง เราตั้งใจที่จะยกระดับพื้นที่ภายในของศูนย์การค้าเกษร อัมรินทร์ ให้ไม่เป็นเพียงศูนย์การค้าที่แวดล้อมไปด้วยร้านค้าของแบรนด์ต่าง ๆ เพียงอย่างเดียว แต่เป็นพื้นที่ที่อนุญาตให้ผู้คนได้มาพบปะและแชร์ไลฟ์สไตล์ร่วมกัน รวมไปถึงเป็นสถานที่สำหรับการเช่าจัดแสดงงานหรืออีเวนท์ต่าง ๆ ด้วยในเวลาเดียวกัน” William Lim กล่าวกับเราถึงไอเดียตั้งต้นของการออกแบบศูนย์การค้าเกษร อัมรินทร์ในครั้งนี้ ก่อนที่จะลงลึกถึงรายละเอียดของการรีโนเวทโครงสร้างต่อในลำดับถัดไป<\/p>\n

“ด้วยความที่ตึกอัมรินทร์แห่งนี้มีโครงสร้างและรายละเอียดตั้งต้นในสไตล์นีโอคลาสสิกจากยุค 1980 ที่มีความไอคอนิคมากและหาได้ยากในปัจจุบัน ดังนั้นแล้วแรงบันดาลใจในการออกแบบหลัก ๆ ในครั้งนี้จึงเป็นเรื่องของการหลอมรวมไลฟ์สไตล์แบบฉบับเอเชียเข้ากับสถาปัตยกรรมสมัยเกรโก-โรมัน (Greco-Roman) ที่สื่อความผ่านเสากรีกโรมันที่ตั้งอยู่ในหลากหลายจุดและพื้นที่โล่งกว้างบริเวณตรงกลางที่เปรียบเสมือนเพียซซ่า (piazza) ในอาคารแห่งนี้ ผมและทีมงานตั้งใจที่จะเก็บรักษาองค์ประกอบคลาสสิคเหล่านี้เอาไว้มากกว่าที่จะทำลายมันทิ้ง <\/p>\n

แม้มันจะง่ายกับพวกเรากว่ามาก หากเราทุบโครงสร้างอาคารเดิมทั้งหมดทิ้งและสร้างอะไรที่ดูร่วมสมัยขึ้นมาแทนที่ แต่เราตั้งใจที่จะเคารพต่อคุณค่าความดั้งเดิมของมัน และผมเชื่อว่ามันเป็นหัวใจที่ทำให้ศูนย์การค้าเกษร อัมรินทร์แห่งนี้ดูแตกต่าง และด้วยเหตุนี้ มันจึงเป็นอภิมหาโปรเจคการรีโนเวทครั้งแรกของผมและทีมงานที่กินเวลายาวนานกว่า 6 ปี และเมื่อผลลัพธ์ออกมาเป็นดั่งที่เห็น ผมเชื่อว่ามันเป็นการเสียเวลาที่คุ้มค่ามาก”<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/colgroup>\n\n\n

ความสำเร็จของโครงการศูนย์การค้าเกษร อัมรินทร์ คงไม่เป็นที่สงสัยแต่อย่างใด หากแต่อะไรคือแรงขับเคลื่อนที่ทำให้ทั้ง Wiliam Lim และ CL3 สร้างสรรค์ผลงานออกมาได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยมและแตกต่างคงเป็นคำถามที่เกิดขึ้นในใจของใครหลาย ๆ คน “หลายคนอาจคิดว่าสถาปนิกจำเป็นต้องรับฟังลูกค้าและทำตามอย่างไม่โต้แย้ง แต่ผมกลับมองว่าเราในฐานะของผู้ออกแบบต้อง ‘กล้า’ ที่จะท้าทายและนำเสนอไอเดียของเราอย่างตรงไปตรงมาบ้างในบางครั้ง ถ้าคุณโชคดีได้ลูกค้าที่ดี เขาจะรับฟังและยอมรับ และผลลัพธ์ที่ออกมาจะเป็นอะไรที่แตกต่างและน่าสนใจ เมื่อเราเชื่อว่าเรานำเสนอสิ่งที่ดีที่สุด ที่เหมาะสมที่สุดให้กับลูกค้าได้ ผมว่ามันจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่เราจะต้องเชื่อมั่นให้ความคิดของตัวเองและกล้าที่จะต่อสู้เพื่อให้มันเกิดขึ้น  ไม่เช่นนั้นคุณจะได้ทำงานในลักษณะที่ซ้ำ ๆ เดิม ๆ ไม่มีอะไรแตกต่างหรือโดดเด่น และหากเป็นเช่นนั้นอุตสาหกรรมนี้อาจไม่ใช่ทางเลือกที่เหมาะสมสำหรับคุณ” William Lim เสริมกับเราเพิ่มเติมเมื่อถูกถามถึงอาวุธลับของความสำเร็จที่เขาเองอยากจะส่งต่อให้กับนักออกแบบรุ่นใหม่ที่สนใจในเส้นทางอาชีพสถาปนิก<\/p>\n

มาจนถึงตรงนี้ คงไม่เป็นที่ถกเถียงกันแต่อย่างใดถึงฝีมือการออกแบบและแนวคิดสุดล้ำหน้าในด้านสถาปัตย์ของ William Lim แต่สำหรับผู้ที่ชื่นชอบหรือคลุกคลีกับเรื่องราวของศิลปะ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในภูมิภาคเอเชีย ชื่อของ William Lim ถือเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงอย่างมาก ผลงานของเขาเป็นที่รู้จักในวงกว้างทั้งยังเคยได้รับเชิญไปจัดแสดงผลงานทั้งในปารีส สิงค์โปร์ มาเก๊า และ Art Basel Hong Kong นิทรรศการศิลปะที่ได้รับการยอมรับในระดับสากลอีกด้วย “ผมคิดว่าทุกคนรู้จักผมในฐานะของสถาปนิก เนื่องด้วยมันเป็นอาชีพของผม ผมจำเป็นที่จะต้องพูดคุยกับลูกค้า ให้คำปรึกษา และนำเสนอทางออกให้กับพวกเขา แต่เมื่อเป็นงานศิลปะ ผมคิดว่ามันค่อนข้างที่จะตรงกันข้าม ผมไม่มีลูกค้าและไม่ได้จำเป็นที่จะต้องแก้ไขปัญหาให้กับใคร มันเกี่ยวกับตัวผมเพียงคนเดียว” William Lim เผยถึงความต่างที่ชัดเจนของสองศาสตร์ที่เขาหลงใหล<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/colgroup>\n\n\n

“ผมมักจะใช้ศิลปะในการถ่ายทอดอารมณ์ของผม และหลายครั้งผมรู้สึกดีขึ้นจริง ๆ หลังจากที่ได้จับแปรงพู่กัน ณ ตอนเด็กผมเป็นเด็กที่ชื่นชอบการวาดรูปมาก แต่ความชอบนี้กลับเป็นอันต้องหยุดไปเมื่อผมเริ่มศึกษาและเข้าสู่วงการสถาปัตย์ อย่างไรก็ตามเมื่อโรคระบาด Covid-19 เกิดขึ้น ผมได้กลับมาอยู่กับตัวเองและสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะของผมอีกครั้ง” William Lim ยังเผยต่ออีกว่าในตอนแรกเขาเองไม่ได้สนใจว่าจะมีใครชื่นชอบในงานที่เขาทำหรือไม่ แต่หลังจากที่เขาได้ลองโพสต์รูปผลงานของเขาลงใน Instagram ผลตอบรับกลับดีเกิดคาดและสิ่งนี้ได้กลายเป็นแรงผลักดันให้เขาสร้างสรรค์ผลงานศิลปะของเขาต่อมาจวบจนปัจจุบัน “จนถึงตอนนี้ก็เป็นเวลากว่า 4 ปีแล้วที่ผมได้กลับมาสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะอย่างจริงจัง ทั้งยังได้รับโอกาสไปจัดแสดงผลงานในหลากหลายนิทรรศการ และ Art Basel Hong Kong คือหนึ่งในนั้น ซึ่งนับว่าเป็นเรื่องที่ดีมาก ๆ สำหรับผม ผมคงตอบไม่ได้ว่างานสถาปัตย์นั้นมีความท้าทายกว่างานศิลปะหรือไม่ แต่ในเชิงความรู้สึก ผมกลับรู้สึกว่าการทำงานศิลปะนั้นมีความท้าทายสูงกว่า อาจเพราะมันไม่มีใครมาคอยบอกว่าคุณต้องทำอะไร ขั้นต่อไปคืออะไร มันไม่มีไกด์ไลน์อะไรเลยนอกจากความรู้สึกของตัวเอง และเมื่อผลงานถูกเผยแพร่ให้ผู้คนได้รับชม ความกังวลถึงผลตอบรับจากสังคมคือสิ่งที่จะเกิดขึ้นตามมา ซึ่งโดยส่วนตัวแล้วผมมองว่ามันคือความท้าทายเชิงอารมณ์ที่ค่อนข้างรุนแรงพอสมควร”<\/p>\n

บทสนทนาดำเนินมาจนถึงช่วงสุดท้ายก่อนที่สัมภาษณ์พิเศษในครั้งนี้จะจบลง ที่ปิดท้ายด้วยประโยคระดับซิกเนเจอร์ของ #Legend อย่าง “Who is your legend” แม้จะคร่ำหวอดในแวดวงศิลปะและการออกแบบมาอย่างยาวนาน แต่เมื่อเป็นเรื่องของงานศิลปะ William Lim เองก็มีบุคคลที่เขายกย่องเป็นพิเศษอยู่เช่นกัน “ผมเองเคยคิดว่าศิลปินสาย Impressionism อย่าง Monet คือต้นแบบแรงบันดาลใจของผลงานของผม แต่เมื่อผมได้เริ่มลงมือสร้างสรรค์งานจริงๆ มันกลับไม่เป็นเช่นกัน แต่ศิลปินอย่าง ‘Paul Gauguin’ ที่รังสรรค์ผลงานผ่านการใช้ ‘วอลลุ่ม’ เป็นเครื่องนำทาง คือความโดดเด่นที่ผมชื่นชอบ คืออัตลักษณ์ของงานศิลปะที่ผมหลงใหล และด้วยเหตุนี้ทำให้ Paul Gauguin เป็น ‘Legend’ ในสายตาของผม และงานศิลปะโดยมากของผมล้วนได้รับแรงบันดาลจากผลงานของเขาอยู่เสมอไม่มากก็น้อย”<\/p>\n
