“…The spirit of ocean adventure finds its expression in the J12 by CHANEL, a sports watch conceived entirely in ceramic, from case to bracelet. A material that unites remarkable resilience with effortless elegance, ceramic lends the watch both strength and refinement. Since its debut in 2000, the all-black ceramic J12 has become one of the most compelling icons in contemporary watchmaking, a sports watch whose allure has only deepened with time…”

The design traces back to Jacques Helleu, the House’s former Artistic Director for watches, who drew inspiration from the sleek, aerodynamic lines of racing yachts. The result was a sports watch that captured the spirit of Gabrielle Chanel herself. It arrived in black, a colour she famously declared to be “which surpasses all.”

Clean lines meet an innovative material: ceramic, prized for its ability to resist heat, wear and corrosion. Fired at temperatures exceeding 1,300°C, it becomes seven times more resistant than steel, yet noticeably lighter. Each piece is crafted by the artisans of the CHANEL Watch Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds,Switzerland, where technical precision meets the House’s distinctive aesthetic. The result is a surface that feels as smooth as silk against the skin, worn with the ease of a second skin.

At the heart of the design lies the Calibre 12.1, a Manufacture self-winding movement composed of 191 components, revealed through the sapphire crystal case back. Chronometer-certified by the COSC and offering a 70-hour power reserve, the movement delivers both precision and endurance. A closer look reveals a circular rotor created exclusively for the House, turning slowly like the mechanism of an observatory clock.

The openworked oscillating weight exposes the lively choreography of gears in a perfect circle, reflecting CHANEL’s enduring fascination with proportion, balance and the quiet power of line. In its latest campaign, CHANEL brings this maritime spirit to life through Gisele Bündchen and Clément Chabernaud. Their presence captures the balance of strength, freedom and elegance that defines the J12—a watch born from the horizon, where design, performance and the call of the open sea meet.
