"...Chin’s Gallery warmly invites you to experience an extraordinary journey into the world of art through the solo exhibition, WHEN FROGS EAT FLIES, by Australian artist Rhys Lee. This latest collection showcases an intriguing blend of inspirations drawn from the works of Matisse, the form of pears, and the movements of boxers, reflecting the artist’s challenge in uniting these three disparate elements into artworks that are both novel and captivating..."
Lee identifies himself as a “Colourist,” with his works expressing a spectrum of emotions ranging from raw intensity to soothing tranquillity. His instinctive use of colour and intuitive approach to painting form the cornerstone of his distinctive artistic style.
A graduate in Fine Arts from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University in 1997, Lee’s extensive career spans exhibitions in Australia and internationally, including Belgium, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and the United States. His work has also earned recognition through nominations for prestigious awards such as the Archibald Prize (2012). Additionally, his creations are held in prominent collections worldwide.
Rhys Lee views his art as an endless journey, where inspiration can be found in everything around us. Whether it’s an image, a sound, or a fleeting emotion, these elements from the present moment become the raw material for his creations. For instance, a pale balloon adrift in a gutter might transform into a pear in a bowl, or the muscular form of a boxer might echo a field of flowers. To him, the beauty of art lies in its ambiguity, offering viewers the freedom to interpret and imagine from their unique perspectives.
“Ambiguity in art is what gives it life and enduring appeal. It invites us to look deeper, to explore its layers of meaning.”
Rhys Lee
