"... As befitting the title as the queen of concept, Red Velvet returns with their latest album 'Cosmic,' celebrating their 10th anniversary. The album's various songs explain the value of different relationships that make oneself shine... the most interesting thing is the music video for the title track 'Cosmic,' which is inspired by the renowned horror film 'Midsommar,' featuring a Femme Fatale role that appears to be a recurring theme for them..."

On June 24, the South Korean girl group Red Velvet returned with their 10th-anniversary album, 'Cosmic.' The album, titled after its lead single, also saw the release of its music video, which is inspired by the popular horror film ‘Midsommar.’

The video explores themes of entering a mysterious land and encountering ritualistic ceremonies directly influenced by Midsommar. The concept reflects Red Velvet's recurring motif of 'Femme Fatale,' where each member challenges male dominance, a theme consistent in their previous works.

In 'Midsommar,' the protagonist Dani finds herself in a vastly different world where women hold sway not just in gender but also in traits like tenderness and emotions, contrasting with societies dominated by male rationality. This village allows Dani to fully express herself and find understanding and acceptance among other women, starkly contrasting her previous experiences of rejection. The video's conclusion, where Dani smiles amidst vibrant floral decorations, symbolises a beautiful rebirth in a new community, reinterpreting Western traditions with flowers instead of stones or coins, marking a positive renewal. Ultimately, it underscores the enduring strength and support women provide each other.

The music video 'Cosmic' parallels 'Midsommar' with recurring symbols like the sun and moon, representing completeness within each member's soul when they are together. It reinforces the idea that when they are united, they can overcome anything. Thus, while initially lost, the protagonist does not meet a tragic end but experiences a beautiful rebirth in this new land, highlighting the solidarity and empowerment of women.
