These tales artfully explore themes of femininity and feminism, earning global recognition for their storytelling, cinematography, and elevated “style” curated through the discerning lens of Miu Miu in every detail..."

For its 27th edition, Miu Miu unveils its latest short film, running over 21 minutes long, under the simple yet powerful title “I’m the Beauty of Your Beauty, I’m the Fear of Your Fear.” Telling the story of Gita, a young woman from China who travels to Malaysia in search of genuine identity. Through learning self-defence and martial arts, guided and trained by her teacher and a group of female friends who become her new family, she discovers herself.

What’s even more intriguing is how “self-defence” plays a vital role in the story, utilised in various aspects of the narrative. This includes training for competitive fighting, enhancing self-defence skills in a refined manner, or conditioning the body for strength. But despite all this, self-defence can’t heal the pain of losing a loved one. This pain is a big reason why Gita decides to leave her home country for Malaysia.

When inner sadness cannot be healed through physical training, this short film series intertwines spiritual narratives to offer another perspective. Through conversations between Gita and an Indian flower seller, the dialogue delves into the myth of the ancient god, Kali, known for symbolising destruction, death, and “transformation.” This spiritual tale resonates with Gita’s journey, ultimately leading her to discover strength and beauty within herself by the end of the film.

Nevertheless, “I’m the Beauty of Your Beauty, I’m the Fear of Your Fear” isn’t just compelling for its intriguing storyline, solely. This short film series is also crafted through the sharped lens of Tan Chui Mui, a highly skilled Malaysian director who has garnered accolades at prestigious film festivals such as the Busan International Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, Oberhausen Short Film Festival, and the Jury Grand Prix at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival for her latest film, “Barbarian Invasion,” released in 2021. Additionally, talented actors like Sdanny Lee and Parinee Buthrasri, recipients of the CHANEL X BAFA Promising Filmmaker Award, contribute to the direction and cinematography. This guarantees a superior quality production without any doubt.
