"...When it comes to Italian designers, the names of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the dynamic duo behind Dolce&Gabbana, are likely among the first that come to mind. Remaining legendary, as both continue to seamlessly infuse the opulence of Italian art and culture into their luxurious, glamorous fashion collections, they leave an indelible mark on fashion enthusiasts with their distinctive styles. Their illustrious design history spanning over four decades has been meticulously curated and showcased in the exhibition ‘From the Heart to the Hands’, held at Palazzo Reale in Milan..."
From the Heart to the Hands exhibition unfolds a captivating narrative journey into the depths of the imagination of this fashion powerhouse. The exhibition meticulously organises themed rooms that narrate tales of inspiration and craftsmanship, rooted in Italian tradition and propelled by the creative vision of this duo designer. Each room, ingeniously blending digital art technology, offers a multi-sensory experience for participants. Spanning 10 meticulously curated spaces, including I1 Fatto a Mano (the hand-made), Artistic glass and artisanal techniques, I1 Gattopardo (The Leopard), Devotion, Tailoring, Ornament and Volume, Architectural and pictorial clothing, Sicilian traditions, White baroque, The Dreams of Goddesses, and The Opera.
Drawing inspiration from diverse art forms spanning architecture, craftsmanship, ballet, regional identities across Italy, music, opera, theatre, and the iconic essence of the “La Dolce Vita” lifestyle, their creations brim with allure and occasional audacity. They intricately blend sophistication with whimsy, embodying a unique character. Furthermore, they embrace the concept of Maximalism in both fashion and accessories, adorning them with ornate decorations and intricate details.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to explore various displays, including the Artistic Glass and Artisanal Techniques room where the high-fashion garments are showcased, adorned with meticulously crafted crystal by Venice artisans Barbini and Barovier & Toso. These exquisite pieces are complemented by decorative accents from the grand chandeliers. Another highlight is The Dreams of Goddesses room. On one side, a replica of the Temple of Concordia sets the stage, featuring haute couture attire from the Valle dei Tempi in the Agrigento collection, characterised by god-print motifs. Meanwhile, on the opposite side, captivating gold mosaic wall decorations provide a stunning backdrop for mannequins adorned in embellished garments evocative of gods and goddesses. These garments are intricately decorated with gems, pearls, and multicoloured crystals, adding to their allure.
This exhibition is a collaborative effort led by esteemed curator Florence Müller, working closely with two designers, and supported by IMG, as well as the Dolce&Gabbana artistic team, who played a role in decorating and arranging the displays to reflect the brand’s unique identity. Set within the splendid architecture of the historic Palazzo Reale, a renowned cultural centre with centuries of history, the exhibition will be held in Milan from April 7th to the 31st July before embarking on a tour to other countries.
