When discussing Swiss business and hospitality, Baur au Lac is consistently part of the conversation, standing out as one of the top names on the list. This captivating account is based on the writer’s personal experiences. During the writer's business trip to Zurich, Baur au Lac was the first choice. Baur au Lac, a luxury brand, is located at the corner of Talstrasse Street, Address No. 1, 8001. The hotel and its surroundings are not only situated in the heart of Zurich but are also bordered by canals, with both modern and historic boat docks connecting to the lake. It is easily accessible by car, bicycle, foot, and Zurich's main public transport—the tram, which stops just across the street at Bürkliplatz.
"Where there is history, there are always stories..." This phrase perfectly encapsulates the captivating narrative of Baur au Lac, a hotel established in 1844 by Johannes Baur, an Austrian inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding area. Whether it’s the stunning view of the Alps, the serene lakeside ambiance, or the meticulous attention to detail, Baur created a hotel with the charm of a beautiful home, offering a full spectrum of ultra-luxury services. It has become a haven for travelers from around the world, while also revitalizing the old port from the war era, transforming it into a vibrant and lively space. Baur au Lac has hosted some of the world's most distinguished guests seeking a peaceful and private retreat to recharge, including the legendary actress Audrey Hepburn and Empress Elisabeth "Sisi" of Austria. Sisi, born Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie in Bavaria, became Empress of Austria and Queen Consort of Hungary after marrying Emperor Franz Joseph I. These iconic figures are just part of the many fascinating stories that add to the hotel’s rich history.
THINGS TO KNOW AND HIGHLIGHTS
- In 2019, Baur au Lac proudly celebrated its 175th anniversary and was honoured with the prestigious title of the world’s oldest 5-star hotel. This milestone is made even more special by the fact that the hotel is still managed by the descendants of its original founder.
- According to the European calendar, the year begins with autumn, followed by summer, autumn, and winter. Each season brings its own unique charm to Baur au Lac. The tagline, "Baur au Lac is your home in Zurich since 1844," reflects the hotel’s unwavering commitment to offering a warm and welcoming experience throughout the year.
- In the early autumn, the Alps are still visible to the naked eye, and as the sun sets, the sky is beautifully painted with layers of white, pink, orange, purple, and blue. As night falls, the sky fills with stars, creating a stunning backdrop.
- During the summer, the hotel’s Private Garden bursts into bloom, providing a serene space for leisure and relaxation. A small doorway leads to a path down to the lake, where a sunbathing deck awaits. Step down and enjoy the refreshing breeze off the water.
- For those who enjoy exercise during the warmer months, local radio signals and digital apps provide updates, as the town allows swimming across the lake between the left and right banks. After a refreshing swim, walk back along the bank, enter through the small iron door of Baur au Lac, and enjoy breakfast just in time.
LOCATION
- Baur au Lac is located at Talstrasse, No.1 ,8001, a location of historical significance, as the building is one of the city’s first and most important structures. Its stunning architecture and beautiful garden are visible from all over the city, whether you're on the left or right side of the lake, or even travelling by boat. The phrase “Swiss elegance and familial charm” perfectly captures both the essence of Swiss sophistication and the warm hospitality offered here.
- Situated in the heart of Zurich, Baur au Lac is within walking distance or a short electric scooter ride from retail districts, the Old Town, restaurants, and the city’s central station, providing easy access to nearby destinations by train.
- The surrounding landscape has been meticulously maintained, with the preservation of its majestic trees providing ample shade, making them a natural landmark of the area.
- Since 2016, the hotel's magnificent garden has been home to over 80,000 bees, making it one of the city’s most important green spaces. In spring and summer, the bees are brought into the garden to help maintain Zurich’s natural ecosystem. Led by their queen, the bees also produce pure, delicious honey, which is used in various recipes and offered to guests. In autumn and winter, they are carefully relocated to a more suitable environment.
THE ROOMS/ SERVICE AND FACILITIES
- The nearly 180-year-old building has been carefully maintained and refurbished to ensure its strength and durability. However, the refurbishment had no negative impact on personal leisure or self-renewal throughout the stay.
- The entire area is divided into functions based on the qualities of the original structure, but using current construction techniques. There are air conditioning system elements that do not interfere with the view, such as a clean water system that will allow us to enjoy the Hot Tub after a long day of strolling about the city.
- When it comes to general design style, we may divide it into three categories: Art Deco, Louis XVI, and English Regency. Each style is distinct, yet they can coexist in the same structure without shame.
- The built-in and freestanding furniture here has been newly created by skilled craftsmen in the Custom-made system to accommodate the physiques of guests from many countries, ensuring that everyone is comfortable, whether it is an armchair that is slightly larger than the original, including a beautiful form of bedside lamps, or pure artwork from many great artists.
- Back to the beginning of this intriguing article about exceptional Swiss hospitality. If we consider firsthand experience, it might be detailed in several books. This is why we would like to invite you to experience this wonderful experience for yourself, to prove the charm of a 180-year-old ultra-luxury hotel that comes with full service, is still managed by the 7th generation, and continues to communicate stories from the past to impress and keep them in the memorable part of the brain forever #
