A team of women reinvent Nike's most iconic sneakers
Jan 23, 2018
Nike has just revealed its latest project: ten reinventions of the iconic Air Jordan 1 and Air Force 1 (five of each model) exclusively designed by a team of women. First created as basketball shoes for men and launched in the 1980s, the two silhouettes have become synonymous with the Nike brand. Over the years, they’ve been interpreted by a variety of artists and fashion houses.
Statement sneakers are now a status symbol and these iconic Nikes are finally being reimagined by – and for – women. “The 1 Reimagined” is the result of a collaborative effort of 14 Nike employees – including materials specialists, colourists, and men’s and women’s mainline footwear designers – handpicked by the brand’s footwear director Andy Caine.
The sneakers, futuristic in shape and conceptualisation, are inspired by five personas: lover, sage, rebel, jester and explorers. They might have been designed specifically with women mind but the pieces are actually unisex.
The genesis of creativity is diversity,” Caine said in a statement. “From a design point of view, each of the designers has a very unique background and personality. Our theory is that when you mix diverse creative talents you realise some magic.”
The ten “The 1 Reimagined” styles will be available on February 7th for a limited release in New York and on the SNKRS app on February 9th.
