Watches & Wonders 2021: Roger Dubuis pushes the boundaries

Roger Dubuis continues to push the boundaries of haute horlogerie with the release of its Glow Me Up Excalibur Single Flying Tourbillon, breaking the rules of luxury aesthetics to create a bold masterpiece on your wrist that cannot be ignored at any time of the day.

By day, you get a dazzling watch that’s set with 60 baguette-cut diamonds on the bezel, while at night it transforms and indeed lives up to its name as it lights up and unleashes the rebelliousness well-known of the brand.

Yes – it glows in the dark, and no – it’s not a simple matter of dashing it with phosphorescent powder. Instead, it involves an intricate, patented process involving filling the grooves that hold the stones with SuperLuminova to make the diamonds appear luminescent without altering them and then patiently applying SuperLuminova on the angles of the movement. The result is almost like a Jekyll and Hyde timepiece – one that exudes both understated extravagance in the morning and dazzling vibrancy at night.

But if you look behind its luminescent properties, you’ll actually see a sophisticated design with circular-brushed top surfaces and polished angles, punctuated by the Poinçon De Genève – the seal awarded by the city of Geneva as a mark of horological excellence for remarkable finishes and decorative details. In addition to its dynamic and refined aesthetic, this 42mm timepiece is also lighter than ever before, owing to its titanium lower tourbillon cage and a mirror-polished cobalt chrome upper tourbillon cage. Inside is the all-new RD512SQ calibre that offers a power reserve of up to 72 hours.

And if the Glow Me Up is too much or too rare for you (only eight will ever be made), then Roger Dubuis also offers three other colorways, each available in 88 each: the dark grey DLC Titanium, cobalt chrome CarTech Mico-Melt BioDur CC and the pink gold EON GOLD that features non-tarnish technology.
