Lamborghini releases a new Countach 50 years in the making

The Italian automaker unveils details to the new Countach, a follow up to the original icon first launched in 1971

Originally debuted in 1971 as a prototype, the Countach quickly set the tone for classic ’70s supercars. The Countach’s tight angles and flashy scissor doors made it a favourite pin-up on the wall of un-licensed teens everywhere. While less than 2000 models were ever produced, it remains one of the most iconic designs from the brand.

Once an untouchable image adored by millions, the new Countach promises to come out just in time to greet fans that are all grown up with the money to spend. Lamborghini harnessed nostalgia for the announcement, writing on Instagram, “Countach was born from a dream. A dream to push the limits of speed, to envision a new type of design, and to create a Super Sports Car like no other. And now, 50 years later, the new Lamborghini Countach is coming.”

A Dream

The original Countach was never known for its driving, the cool look distracting from impractical production and understeer concerns. Though some followers are less concerned with the old problems, more worried that the car will not be its own design, but a remake of the Aventador in a new shell.

However, the big reveal shows a design bridges the iconic model with modern technology. The Countach has a V12 hybrid engine that delivers top speed of 355 km/h. The carbon fiber supercar will be produced in a limited edition of 112 units.

The new Countach is not the only hybrid supercar has Lamborghini produced. The company first pursued hybridisation options in 2014 in the Asterion LPI 910-4 concept car. Then in 2019, they made history in the Sián FKP 37, the first-ever V12 hybrid sports car powered by supercapacitors. Another hybrid would follow the trend, as well as keeping with Lamborghini’s Focu5on sustainability initiative.
