Jeff Koon’s Installs New Work In New York

Jeff Koon's Ballerina

Jeff Koons, the man behind pieces such as Rabbit (1986) and Michael Jackson and Bubbles (1988), is one of the most internationally recognised contemporary artists of our era, and he is back with a gigantic new installation. His newest creation, Seated Ballerina, is a larger-than-life inflatable sculpture erected in Rockefeller Center, right in the heart of New York City’s mid-town district. The work is a part of his critically acclaimed series “Antiquity” and was inspired by a porcelain doll.

The artwork aims to bring awareness to May as National Missing Children’s Month, and to support organisations such as the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC) that work to create a safer world for children. Koons said “I hope the installation of Seated Ballerina at Rockefeller Center offers a sense of affirmation and excitement to the viewer to reach their potential. The aspect of reflectivity emulates life’s energy; it’s about contemplation and what it means to be a human being. It’s a very hopeful piece.”

ICMEC aims to protect children from abduction, sexual abuse, and exploitation by gathering the people, resources, and tools needed to fill those gaps.

Koons has also recently collaborated with Louis Vuitton to commemorate master artists in history.
