#legend100 folks on the craziest things they’ve done for love
Feb 10, 2025
Love is one hell of a drug. One that makes us lose our mind and all sense of logic at times. Carrie Bradshaw had a habit of stalking her lovers – and their girlfriends and ex-wives. Saturday Night Live comedian and actor Pete Davidson went engagement ring shopping the day he met ex-fiancée Ariana Grande. Then there’s Japan’s former Princess Ayako, now Ayako Moriya, who renounced her royal title to marry her commoner college sweetheart. While there’s no denying that most of us have been blinded by love at least once, we set out to understand just how many hoops people are willing to jump through – or planes they’re willing to jump out of – for this all-consuming feeling. Stephenie Gee asks our #legend100s to bare all about the craziest things they’ve done for love

“Nothing too crazy tbh but I would make a birthday cake (literally the Birthday Cake from Milk Bar) for my ex’s birthday. It was challenging for a guy like me who almost never cooks, haha!”

“ From high-school sweethearts to where we are now, our journey has been anything but ordinary. It all started with him watching me practice high jump after school, patiently waiting as I tried to perfect each leap. When university choices came, he chose the same university as me, understanding that my training would always come first in our relationship.
Our love grew stronger through every challenge. While my path as a high jumper took me to Sydney for training, he never let the distance dim our connection. He’d travel all the way from Hong Kong just to spend precious moments together, making those long-distance months bearable. Those surprise visits meant everything – him showing up at my training facility, watching me clear new heights, understanding my dreams as if they were his own.
From teenage love notes to international phone calls, and sharing canteen lunches to coordinating visits across time zones, we’ve evolved so much. Yet somehow, whether we’re separated by a classroom or continents, he still gives me the same butterflies I felt in our high-school days.
Now, at 30, looking back at all we’ve conquered together – the competitions, the distance, the victories and the setbacks – what amazes me most is how he can still make my heart race, just like he did when we were teenagers in our school uniforms.”

“The craziest thing I’ve ever done for love is going through a four-year long-distance relationship while I was studying abroad. It was my first love. Although it didn’t end up working out, we were together for more than seven years.”

“Move across the world to a place I’ve never set foot in. That’s what happened when my then boyfriend got a job opportunity in Hong Kong seven years ago. We’ve since been engaged and married, and now I’ve jumped into another crazy adventure for love, opening Barkada in Central as a love letter to my Filipino heritage.”

“I’m a hopeless romantic and I adore love. It’s fair to say that I’ve done plenty of crazy things for love, some I would even say stupid, haha. But one of the craziest things I’ve done is moving to a different country. It’s a huge change but going with the flow has always been my way of life, and it has served me well so far. :)”

“When I was 17 I met this girl I really liked at a summer programme. We bonded over having this sort of international background because most of the other people in the programme had spent their whole lives in the US. When the programme ended she had to go back to school in England and I went back to school in California, and it was really sad but we kept in touch and had a long-distance relationship.
Then we had this idea to meet in New York for the New Year’s Eve countdown, so we both convinced our families to go to New York for NYE. Once I got to New York I ditched my family for most of the trip to hang out with the girl. Every NYE my family still makes fun of me for tricking them into going to New York for that year’s NYE.”

“I was in the middle of filming a project in America when I convinced the producer to reschedule one of my shooting days. Why? So I could fly back to Hong Kong for just 24 hours to surprise my boyfriend (now husband) and spend his birthday with him. I even brought his favourite In-N-Out burger, nursing it all the way on the plane. Gave it to him and he loved it. It was like an international food delivery surprise!”

“Back in high school, I invited some friends over to make our own Valentine’s Day chocolates. I was super eager to get home, but I had forgotten my keys so instead I decided to climb up the water pipe and go in through the open window. I ended up making matcha chocolate and it was a success, but I got in so much trouble.”

"The craziest thing I’ve ever done for love is hopping on a flight once every two months to be with my other half for the last seven years. Long distance isn’t easy, but it’s so worth it when you find that special someone!”

“It may sound a bit wild, but after just two months of dating, I found out I was pregnant. We took a leap of faith and got married, and now we’re happily raising our two sons together. It’s definitely the craziest thing I’ve done for love, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!”

“The craziest thing I’ve done for love is staying in Hong Kong when I had the chance to go back to another country for a career opportunity. It was in our early stages of dating but the love was so strong I didn’t want to give up!”
