Known for his Oscar-nominated role in Juno, Inception and Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, Elliot Page has announced that he is trans on social media.

“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived in this place in my life,” he wrote.

“I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.”

His post received an outpouring of support all over social media, with Netflix’s official account also tweeting their support, saying they were “So proud of our superhero!”

While he was hailed for being brave, Elliot also acknowledged that he was scared. “The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences,” he shared.

In the past year alone, 37 transgender people were violently killed in the US, according to the the Human Rights Campaign. In Elliot’s post, he promised to do everything he could to change the world for the better.

Elliot first came out as gay in 2014 at the LGBTQ youth event, Time to Thrive conference, and married New York dance teacher Emma Portner several years ago.
