Huawei reveals 57 photography award winners

Chinese tech company Huawei announced the winners of the XMAGE Awards 2023 in which entrees are all taken with Huawei devices

The competition named three Grand Prize winners, 17 Best-in-Category winners, 34 Runner-up winners, and three Honorable Mentions.

This year’s winners were selected from more than 600,000 entries received between April 7 and August 15 from participants from nearly 100 countries. The top countries with the highest number of entries are China, Malaysia, Turkey, Poland, the Philippines and the UAE. At the same time, the most popular phone models used were the Huawei P60 Pro, P40 Pro, and Mate 40 Pro.

The three grand prize winners

“Dragon Clouds” by Domcar Calinawan Lagto from the Philippines, “Airshow” by Piotr Cebula from Poland, and “Fearless Eagle” by Dou Chuanli from China were awarded the Grand Prizes. Each winner will receive US$10,000 from the XMAGE creation fund.

Pei Tongtong, a Chinese fashion photographer and one of the judges in the competition says of “Dragon Clouds”, “Volcanoes, thunder and lightning were regarded as unpredictable divine powers in ancient times. Sharp and powerful lightning pierced the huge volcanic cloud. The surrounding dark sky stared nervously, and a fierce battle seemed to be going on in the red cracks in the clouds. This is a very rare scene to capture in the unpredictable nature. It is like an anxious martial arts video, bringing shocking visual sense.”

“Airshow” by Piotr Cebula, Poland – The photo was taken in this summer during an airshow held at the beautiful aeroclub airport, which captured the spectator watching the aerobatic plane performing a spectacular aerial acrobatics show. – Taken with Huawei P40 Pro

Competition judge Jessica Hromas says of “Airshow”, “The image poses more questions than it does answers and so in turn excites the imagination of the viewer. Is the plane going to make it or crash? Where is it going? Who is the silhouetted man in the foreground? There is sense of a story unfolding and of movement in this photo which invites the viewer to fill in the gaps.”

“Fearless Eagle” by Dou Chuanli, China – The eagle is brave and indomitable, not afraid of any difficulties and dangers, and has a strong will. When the black hand behind it reaches out, its eyes are still firm and sharp! I am the eagle, I am not afraid of danger! – Taken with Huawei Mate 40 RS

“In addition to what is outside, it is even more important to find the inside of the subjects, their characters, or their emotions at that moment,” says Pei. “We have seen many eagles in paintings, photography and videos, but I will definitely always remember this one — it captures the true soul of the eagle. Under its plump, thick feathers are its sharp, intimidating eyes.”

New categories this year

This year’s competition featured an array of categories including Night Walk, Portrait, Art & Fashion, Outdoor, Hello Life, Storyboard, Action, and Storytelling. New categories were added to help participants unleash their creativity and showcase their unique perspectives.

The 17 Best-in-Category winners and the 34 Runner-up winners were selected from each category, and will each receive US$1,500 and US$1000, courtesy of the XMAGE creation fund.
